UP FOR AUCTION: ENRICO CARUSO
UNPUBLISHED CARUSO SEI MORTA NELLA VITA MIA B21774
78RPM ONE SIDED RED VINYL RCA
Sei Morta Nella Vita Mia (Costa) Matrix B-21774 April 16, 1918 PIANO V. BELLEZZA
Sei morta ne la vita mia, which remained unpublished till long after his death in 1921. RCA retrieved it from the vaults and released it as their 'Christmas gift' of 1947. According to his widow, Dorothy, it was the record which captured Caruso's voice most faithfully of all. Piano accompaniment by V' Bellezza. If among all of them there is one that brings the greatest of all tenors into the room where we sit ("after the singer is dead and the maker buried"), this may well be it. Collectors and admirers of Caruso, however, have always been intrigued by certain rare existing Caruso recordings which, for reasons not specified clearly, were never issued. The reasons for their being withheld from distribution range from the artist's possible dissatisfaction with the end result to some technical defect, a false start, possible lack of balance with a vocal. partner, etc. Often it is difficult for today's listener to fathom the reasons for their being bypassed or rejected. To replace the 'flawed' version, Caruso usually made one or even two more takes of the selection in question at the same session, or a selection, if released, would subsequently be replaced by a later version made by him. The latter generally met certain specifications more satisfactorily, but it did not necessarily surpass the earlier version's ardor, style, vocal glow, or sheer youth.
