Description
This is the U. S. Marine Band's recording of the iconic "Maple Leaf Rag" on 78 RPM disk on single-sided, Victor Records (4911). Recorded in 1906, it is the first surviving recording of "The Maple Leaf Rag". Here is link to a recording I made of this record. There is no noise reduction... no audio tweaks: RetrieverRecords.com.
The "Maple Leaf Rag" (copyright registered on 18 September 1899) is an early ragtime musical composition for piano composed by Scott Joplin. It was one of Joplin's early works, and became the model for ragtime compositions by subsequent composers. It is one of the most famous of all ragtime pieces. As a result Joplin was called the "King of Ragtime". The piece gave Joplin a steady if unspectacular income for the rest of his life. Despite ragtime's decline after Joplin's death in 1917, the "Maple Leaf Rag" continued to be recorded by many well-known artists. The Ragtime revival of the 1970s brought it back to mainstream public notice once again.
There are quite a few scratches and scuffing. It is greying and looks as though it has been played quite a bit in its 109 year lifetime. It doesn't skip, however. And the music comes through clearly. However, there is quite a bit of surface noise.
