For sale is an album that you probably DON'T have in your Beatles collection . . . it’s a copy of ‘Meet The Beatles’ with a Paste-Over cover! First some background on this unique item: Most people familiar with the Beatles Yesterday & Today album released in 1966, know about the infamous ‘Butcher cover’ being replaced by the trunk cover. However many Beatles’ collectors are unaware of another ‘paste-over’ scheme that Capitol Records had done over 2 and a half years earlier. When the band hit it big after their U.S. debut on the Ed Sullivan show in early 1964, Capitol was having trouble producing the albums fast enough for the unprecedented public demand. Meanwhile several other releases by the label were sitting in the warehouse with little to no interest. Some of these artists included: Vic Damone, Fred Waring and others. The record label got the idea to take some front & back cover slicks of the ‘Meet the Beatles’ LP that were already printed, paste them over the above mentioned albums in order to speed up distribution and ‘recycle’ the non-sellers. This was an efficient use of material plus it took care of the problem of jackets that couldn’t be produced fast enough. This no doubt influenced the ‘Trunk slick cover-up’ of 1966!
Photos show ‘Meet’ slick peeled back slightly to reveal the previous LP cover Ray Anthony’s ‘I Almost Lost My Mind’. At this point it’s hard to place a dollar value on these since so few have surfaced so bid high . . . you may never see another!
Jacket is in VG+ or better cond. with all seams in tact, no banged up corners & includes the original inner slv. Only issue is an area on top / back corner where a sticker may have been removed. The record has a fair number of scuffs and surface marks. It is not play graded but looks VG- or so. Of course the LP can be replaced since this auction is more about the unique jacket! Started low to determine the value it deserves.
