SINGER-SONGWRITER LOLLAR DIES AT 27

Jonathan Lollar, the Coast man who overcame blindness and a brain tumor to become a singer and songwriter, died Monday morning at his home. Lollar's talents were many. He played guitar, piano, drums, clarinet, harmonica and other instruments. He also wrote several songs and even recorded a gospel album.

His accomplishments brought him fame, and he met Princess Diana and other celebrities.

Lollar, 27, had been blind since he was 10 because of a brain tumor that was discovered at age 6. The tumor's pressure on his pituitary gland hampered his growth.

But it didn't break his spirits. Nothing stopped him from excelling as a person and a musician. Doctors predicted early on that Jonathan wouldn't live longer than a year. ''He defied them all,'' said his mother, Dorothy Lollar. ''He was a living miracle.''

''I'll miss his presence, because I took him out somewhere to eat every day, because he loved to be around people,'' she said. ''All the Coast people knew that he loved everyone.'' Jean Dearing, a longtime friend of the Lollars, said Jonathan affected everyone he knew.

''He touched more people than any human I've ever seen or heard of, famous or not famous. He had the most beautiful spirit,'' Dearing said. ''He was totally blind, but he finished high school at a regular school. He was so intelligent.'' “This child had such a love for God and undying faith at even a tender age,'' Dearing said. ''He was always giving God thanks for everything -- even if he was meeting Princess Diana or the president.''

Survivors include his mother, Dorothy Lollar of Ocean Springs; three brothers, Mike W. Lollar of New Orleans, Ronald D. Lollar of Las Vegas, Nev., and Joel L. Lollar of Natchez; a sister, Sandra K. Roberts of Jayess; seven nieces; and three nephews.
