Description
The Krickets, Sound By the Krickets, no label name. This is chiefly an album of cover versions, some garage, most not. The winners here are the tough, raw version of Money, which features a good guitar break, and Mashed Potatoes, which is not the Dee Dee Sharp song, but a basic, fast rock and roll groove with some rudimentary vocals. I've included clips of both. Other songs are mostly instrumental, though It Ain't Me Babe, Donna, and I Understand have vocals. I'm guessing this is from late 1965, since the version of It Ain't Me Babe is clearly patterned after the Turtles arrangement, and it came out in the fall of that year. I'm also guessing it's from Massachusetts, since the label says, "Recorded by Roger Cormier for Fall River," and the only Fall River I know is there. And, furthermore, I'm guessing that this record never had a cover. Everything about it says "basement" and "cheap." The audio levels go up and down for no apparent reason, and it sounds like no one mixed it or did anything beyond putting what was on the tape onto a disk. There's no label name, so it's as private as private gets, and the band credits are right on the label. I'd be shocked if these guys bothered to have a cover made for this thing. The record is in nice VG shape and plays well throughout. A cool, rare and, as far as I can tell, completely unknown period piece, with some pretty good garage band moments on it. If anyone has any information about this record, let me know and I'll post it.
