JAMES BOOKER New Orleans Piano Wizard: Live! Used LP in Near Mint/Near Mint condition. Rounder Records Catalog # 2027 (originally Gold Records # 11035, 1981); mid- to late 1980s
Condition: Vinyl has some streaks and spots, which don’t affect sound. LP jacket has no real flaws.
Behind the Music: Talk about an under-appreciated American musical treasure! James Booker doubtless was best known in his native New Orleans music scene, but the title of this album is no hype—he was a piano wizard, and a terrific vocalist as well. This was recognized in Europe, and hence this album was recorded in concert at the (get this!) Boogie Woogie and Ragtime Piano Contest in Zurich (!) in November 1977. Yeah, that’s in Switzerland. When first I heard the rendition here of Percy Mayfield’s “Please Send Me Someone to Love,” I knew I’d heard the definitive version and I bought the LP promptly. Sure, that’s my personal opinion, but I defy you to find a better performance.
