CAPTAIN BEEFHEART and His Magic Band: Safe as Milk. Used German RE of Buddah LP in Mint/Mint condition. TELDEC Telefunken-Decca Records LP Catalog # 6.23171 AF; original Buddah Records release 1968
Condition: LP sports red Buddah label, 100% pristine. Jacket has one tiny flaw—very small wrinkle at upper right as seen from front. Such a flaw could easily manifest in any LP just removed from original shrinkwrap. If the original inner sleeve contained credits and/or lyrics, I’m afraid they are absent, as I have this record in a generic sleeve.
Behind the Music: I did not discover Capt. Beefheart until perhaps 1980. When I pursued this album at retail, this German pressing (year unknown to me) is what came into my hands. There are many versions of this album listed online, but I believe this one is fairly RARE! “Safe as milk.” I suspect this phrase refers to the fact that when my generation was growing up, milk was not so “safe,” containing Strontium-90 and other components of radioactive fallout from testing of nuclear weapons in western US (and elsewhere in the world, carried by globe-circling wind currents). Hey, ya gotta have a sense of humor about these things, right? Thank you, Capt. Beefheart!
