RAN BLAKE QUARTET: Short Life of Barbara Monk. Used vintage LP in Mint/Mint condition. Soul Note Records LP Catalog # 1127; 1987 (imported from Italy)
Condition: Vinyl is flawless. Jacket has slight red smudges (forming two vertical stripes) on front below the ‘L’ in Blake. I suspect this was penetration thru the shrinkwrap by the red ink employed back in the day to stamp “Imported from Italy” on Soul Note and Black Saint Records LPs. [Both labels were made and distributed by Polygram International.] Front of jacket also has a partial, minor ring impression.
Behind the Music: Ran Blake is an under-appreciated pianist and composer. So not surprising that though recorded (digitally apparently) in Massachusetts, USA the project had to go to Europe for its artistry to be valued. Barbara Monk, BTW, was daughter of the legendary Thelonious. She died tragically young, of cancer. Ricky Ford makes a giant contribution to this recording. The group is rounded out by bassist Ed Felson and drummer Jon Hazilla. You’ll find three Blake originals in this program, with other selections ranging from Cole Porter to traditional “folk” melodies to “Vradiazi,” written by Mikis Theodorakis, composer of the famous music for the movie Zorba the Greek. Notes on the music by well-known Jazz writer Francis Davis are on back of the jacket.
