YUSEF LATEEF: Suite 16. Used vintage LP in Mint/Near Mint condition. Atlantic Records LP Catalog # SD 1563; 1970 

Condition: LP is pristine, classic green & red Atlantic labels; vinyl is heavier than typical for the period, pretty quiet surfaces. Jacket is still glossy on front, made of substantial cardboard, so no corner crushes. A little yellowing from age on jacket back, and a sales clerk’s notation at bottom right of 3.49 price (those were the days!). Original paper inner sleeve has a large wrinkle, but I include it as an example of vintage Pop Music marketing of the time. Who the heck was The Assembled Multitude?! King Crimson, Led Zep, CSN&Y, The Rascals, Roberta Flack and others are also promoted.

Behind the Music: The late Yusef Lateef was one of the Jazz guys who insisted on expanding the arsenal of instruments at his disposal, and playing all with high  skill. On this album, he played flutes, oboe, tenor & soprano saxophones, bamboo flute, pneumatic bamboo flute (!), bells and tambourine. Yeah, that’s “all.” He composed and arranged almost all the selections. Side One includes versions of “When a Man Loves a Woman” and the Beatles’ “Michelle.” Selections on this side also feature The Sweet Inspirations on vocals. Popular guitarists Earl Klugh and Eric Gale join Joe Zawinul and other stalwarts in the groups (personnel varies cut by cut). Did this empower Atlantic Records to sell a million copies of this album? Silly question—it’s Jazz, after all. Side Two in its entirety consists of the “Symphonic Blues Suite,” with a core group—Lateef, Barry Harris on piano, Bob Cunningham on bass, and Albert ‘Tootie’ Heath on drums—accompanied by the Cologne Radio Orchestra, recorded in Germany. This album boasts very real musical values. It is not just an “oddity” or “novelty” project to showcase the leader’s instrumental virtuosity. You should buy it!
