Beat The Road, Jack!

When it comes to Scandinavia, the Swedish scene is the one usually in the spotlight. Though this is not the first Danish sampler, the few already available have been pretty much overlooked. If you like garage rock i.e. 60s d.i.y. beat music, you're missing something. D.i.y. was Jacks Beat records' credo. We're talking primitive and sloppy here. Check out the boss's own `65 45 with the Outlaws, "Step Into My Heart/I Need a Girl." Inept and almost mental stuff. I'm sure King Uzsniewiecz would've loved to play sax on this. Yes, this is trash, but good trash. In `68, Jack was still sounding like it was `64, but "Way it Feels" (with the Bulwers), despite a kind of light weight guitar sound and backing vocals, had a definitive punk feel, even a teeny-weeny bit of psych too. Quite insane again. Jack was a case indeed.

Among the other bands, All Rounds are the required (and obvious) Pretty Things fans, but "I Love You/Everybody" are also very much faithful to the label trash ethic. The Black Four too, their punker "Black Devil" includes two drum breaks sounding like the Shaggs doing "Wipe out." More insanity can be found in the Gipsies' quasi-ska cover of Fats Domino's "Ain't That a Shame." And I haven't mentioned "To Masturbate" by Mad Sound yet...At some point, you wonder if you're dealing with some kind of a Beat Special volume of the "Big Itch" series...and they all come from the same bloody local label! Eating Danish may damage your health or what? Among the more down-to-earth material, you'll find some unusual covers ("Cara-Lin," "It's Not True" being good ones, "Call My Name" being weak) and "I'll Go Now" by les Candidates, a very cool jangly beat punker, moody and frantic at the same time. This is the kind of record you'll either hate or love: you've been warned. P.S.: Some of these songs were on the Danish Pebbles, but the sound is much improved here, so don't let this stop you if your cash don't mind trash.
