That’s It Man!
Here’s a Texas R&B record that a lot of people don’t know to be a Texas record at all. It’s by the Valentines, which is a rockin’ R&B group that was centered around Cal Valentine. He went thru a bunch of different groups, starting out with his school friend Al Braggs (aka ‘TNT’) and they put together their first group in 1955. Calling themselves the Five Notes, they recorded for Chess Records who released one single by the group in 1955.
Back home in Dallas they recorded as the Five Masks and appeared in the film Rock Baby Rock It. Then in 1958, Cal started playing guitar in the act, and along with his brother Robert Valentine, they named themselves The Valentines. They would cut three singles for King Records.
This is one of the best of those singles, and is the first of the three. It’s from 1960 and pairs up the instrumental romp “That’s It Man” with the vocal “Please Don’t Leave, Please Don’t Go.” This topside is a real R&M dance number and I’ve seen it listed again and again among fave shakers.
