The Least We Can Do Is Wave to Each Other is the second album by the British progressive rock band Van der Graaf Generator. It was released in 1970. The album was reissued in re-mastered form, with two bonus tracks, in 2005.

While this is the second album in the Van der Graaf Generator catalogue, it is really the first proper album by the band. Their previous album, The Aerosol Grey Machine had been written and recorded as a solo record by singer and main songwriter Peter Hammill, but because of a deal with the record company, was released under the Van der Graaf Generator name in the US and Germany only.

The Least We Can Do Is Wave to Each Other was recorded at Trident Studios, London, 11–14 December 1969. Trident was one of the most advanced studios in all of Europe at the time]. Most of the album was recorded on an 8-track reel to reel machine. However, the song After The Flood was recorded on a new state of the art 16-track recorder. It was one of the first such 16 track recordings made in the U.K.

The album credited Hugh Banton with writing the cello parts on "Refugees", but he was not given an actual songwriting credit. The first U.S. issue of the album was released by the Probe Records division of ABC Records also in 1970. It featured a different cover than the U.K. version.

The absolute rarity of this album is not to be underestimated. It hardly ever surfaces nowadays. This is an absolutely gorgeous slab of early quality CHARISMA vinyl which is in splendid  condition!! This has a lovely deep glossy sheen!! Hauntingly beautiful songcraft!!! Immense quality psych/prog album that ticks all the right boxes and incredibly hard to find. I have twentyfive years experience in grading. It doesn't get much better than this!!

Vinyl: EX .   I have played this in FULL twice over> fantastic audio, a joy to listen to!! This is the true official 1st press. The second press has a different mix. I first played for a general listen and a second time for a more detailed observation. Light retraction mini hairlines only. This vinyl retains its fabulous deep glossy sheen and has clearly been looked after. A top gorgeous vinyl which has been looked after by a keen prog collector!! Fantastic songcraft!! I am very glad to be able to report that this is a fine slab of vinyl without any problems at all and as such worthy of inclusion of any great prog collection.   Of course NO jumps/clicks/skips etc. Please have a good look at the accompanying pictures.

Gatefold sleeve: EX.  Beautiful "Garrod & Lofthouse Ltd." gatefold sleeve. The opening is still super crisp and the top and bottom edges are fully intact with barely any wear at all. The spine is likewise totally unworn. Two tiny creases barely noticeable. It would be very difficult indeed to upgrade from this super copy. Has one small indent to the front bottom in the logo. A small nick to the rear, but can barely be noticed.There are NO seam splits and NO tears at all. Please have a careful look at all pictures provided. Probably the best one you will find in a long time. NO major creases, NO writing, NO smudges.  


Poster. The most elusive part of this package is the poster which came only with the first 300 albums sold! As a result this is barely ever found at all and only the first one I have ever found in over 20 years!! It is in EX++ condition and has never been hung but has always been sat ins8de the sleeve.

Labels: EX+. Only light spindle traces indicating this has not been played much.These are the far rarer heavy texured labels!! The real thing!

  EARLY UK PRESS 1972

Machined Matrices //1 //1 earliest matrices and mother stampers as per the Discogs description of an original first UK press.

 The  FOURTH GG album on the swirl label and a true prog classic it is! 

               


 The heavy vinyl with high groovewalls provides a fantastic audio experience with channelling not equalled by the later CD version. I played this on my Technics turntable with a Linn cartridge and through my very revealing Rotel amp and B&W three way speakers!!! A beautiful CLASSIC with supreme songcraft, a joy to listen to!!!!



Vinyl: EX+.  I'm very happy to be able to present this gem in this great condition. Only lightly played . No spindle traces. The audio is simply sublime as played on my Technics deck with Linn Sondek cartridge and through my rotel amp and B&W speakers.  This heavy vinyl sounds out of this world, a majestic album that went largely unnoticed at the time.  There are no marks or hairlines. There are some paper retraction traces only visible under a strong light but otherwise this vinyl is a beautiful EX+. Great replay on my premium sound system without any skips or jumps.The labels still retain their beautiful original appearance.




Gatefold Sleeve: EX+/NM.  INCREDIBLE! A fantastic looked after matt gatefold .The sleeve is beautifully coloured on the outside AND the inside! It sits completely flat and this album has a nice sturdy structure with absolutely stunning artwork. Lovely colours and not any creases or stickers. Incredibly, barely any wear on the edges and a perfect spine and super crisp opening,  as on day one of its existence (now 51 years old).


The original polylined swirl inner sleeve is still present in EX condition.

 

  



This is a unique investment opportunity!!! The next prog album to go completely through the roof. Finding this album in any condition at all is nearly impossible so late in the day. Get this while you still can. This value of the album is only going to go one way ... up and up ... until it will be totally unavailable at all for a reasonable price.
