Those familiar with Van Morrison’s ever mercurial muse could hardly have been surprised when he turned up on the artistically centered, avant-country label Lost Highway to pay tribute to a era-spanning slate of country icons on the Nashville imprint's ‘06 collection, Pay the Devil. But while the ensuing years were dominated by several rich anthologies of Morrison’s work, he’s returned here to masterfully show his love of country was no passing fancy. As the title suggests, Morrison’s self-produced approach to the genre is both musically and emotionally elemental, a no frills approach that fits him like a well-worn pair of Tony Llamas. Indeed, even as he’s addressing matters of musical style and substance in an unusually introspective way on "That’s Entertainment" and "Soul," the veteran’s singing here is so natural and deceptively effortless as to disguise how forcefully Morrison has immersed himself in the country mold – or, more to the point, remade it lovingly in his own image, also marking the first time in several years he’s penned all the songs on one of his albums. Whether offering a little tutelage about the vagaries of fate on "School of Hard Knocks," taking W.C. Handy’s "St. Louis Blues" as the starting point for the slow-burning, Hammond B3-seeped country blues lament "Don’t Go to Nightclubs Anymore," or preaching the backroads Zen gospel of the title track and Banjo-seasoned elegy "Song of Home," Morrison’s warm, world-weary voice connects with themes that are as familiar as sunshine – and every bit as fundamentally complicated.Product Description
On April 1st, Lost Highway will proudly release Keep It Simple, the new album from Van Morrison. Keep It Simple is Morrison's first album of new material since 2005, and the first in several years in which he composed all 11 songs specifically for one album. In the interim the legendary artist had a year that may be unprecedented for any living artist, having released three separate collections of his hits, with the latest, Still On Top entering the UK charts at #2 and selling platinum, proving the ongoing appetite for his unrivalled work.
His music has always incorporated the widely varied influences he heard and absorbed since his childhood days on the streets of Belfast- long before the bands of his youth and his initial breakthrough with the band he started early on- called "Them."
On Keep It Simple, Morrison honors all those varied influences - Ulster-Scots Celtic, Jazz, Folk, Blues, Country, Soul and Gospel - and an added surprise of a mighty Ukelele -most times melding them all together at once creating his unmistakable signature sound.
In some of these songs Morrison addresses the propaganda of the myth perpetrating rock music world. There is a definite theme that recurs throughout the album, especially in the title track.
In keeping with that idea, Keep It Simple does not boast the big horns or expected string arrangements of some of Morrison's previous work. What it does feature are gorgeous songs rich with emotion, depth and beauty.
The LP edition boasts 3 additional tracks recorded live in 2008: "Blue And Green", "Little Village", "And The Healing Has Begun".

Pay The Devil is a new country set from the legendary Van Morrison. It is comprised of 14 tracks; three of these are originals and 11 are covers of some of Morrison's favorite classic country songs, including "Your Cheatin' Heart," "Things Have Gone To Pieces" and "Big Blue Diamonds." In 1962, Ray Charles, one of Morrison's biggest influences recorded the monumental Modern Sounds In Country & Western Music. At the time the genre jump seemed risky, but Charles proved that a great artist could make it work if he worked with great songs. Morrison, who has successfully recorded jazz, rock, R&B, blues, Celtic, skiffle and more, proves that theory to be valid. His distinctive voice melds seamlessly with these classics written by songwriting masters such as Hank Williams, Webb Pierce, Merle Kilgore, Rodney Crowell and Leon Payne. Track Listings 1. 1968's "Astral Weeks" remains not only Morrison's masterpiece, but one of the greatest records ever made. A haunting, deeply personal collection of impressionistic folk styled epics recorded by an all star jazz backing unit, its poetic complexity earned critical raves but made only a minimal commercial impact.
"There was no precedent for it in Van Morrison's previous vocal and songwriting success: the bright, rolling pop of his 1967 Top Ten hit, "Brown Eyed Girl"; his earlier spell as the leader of Irish R&B punks Them and writer of the garage-rock standard "Gloria." And Morrison — a notoriously private man for whom singing and songwriting have long been a form of emotional armor as well as release — never sounded as warm and ecstatic, more sensual and vulnerable, as he did on Astral Weeks." - www.rollingstone.com
"Once the needle drops, it's as if the music is being piped in from the heavens. Vocals are lifelike, levels non-fatiguing, and instruments richly detailed." - Bob Gendron, The Absolute Sound, April/May 2009, Issue 192

Slim Slow Slider VAN MORRISON ASTRAL WEEKS LIVE AT HOLLYWOOD BOWL - DOUBLE LP SET - Recorded in 1968 when the Belfast-bred, blues-rock music legend Van Morrison was just 22 years old, Astral Weeks immediately received critical acclaim and continues to be cited as one of the greatest albums of the rock era. Subsequently the album has been ranked on numerous Best Albums of All Time lists, including #19 on Rolling Stone s 500 Greatest Albums of All Time and the 40th Greatest Album Ever on VH-1's list in 2003. Both Astral Weeks and Moondance (Morrison's next album) were inducted into the Grammy® Hall of Fame.
Astral Weeks became a cult favorite and was seen almost as a religion to many artists. On November 7 and 8, 2008, four decades later, at the age 63, Van Morrison revisited Astral Weeks live in its entirety at the Hollywood Bowl, and delivered a jawdropping, awe-inspiring performance.
The first half of the show featured Morrison playing timeless classics that have made him a legend, while the second half was the breathtaking performance of the Astral Weeks album. Van Morrison did not simply re-create what he did 40 years ago in a NY studio, but instead took the songs to a dramatically higher contemporary level. The jazz-rooted compositions of Astral Weeks are poetic stories of young love and the quest to find one s place in life. They were, and remain, ideal source material for musical improvisation that gives way to the sense of wonder for which Morrison has always striven.
" . . . transcendence is what Morrison has been after with his music from the beginning, and it s what he achieved frequently on Friday, when he played his watershed 1968 album Astral Weeks live in its entirety for the first time. The wondrous, youthful timbre of his voice then has evolved over the years into a richer, fuller instrument, with every bit of its remarkable elasticity very much intact."

It's unusual for a decade-defining record to come out in that decade's first year, but that was clearly the case with "Moondance". While it would have been one of the finest albums of any decade, it clearly marked a turning point both for Van Morrison and for rock as a whole. Coming after 1968's expansive, acoustic, jazz-inflected "Astral Weeks", "Moondance" marks a complete about-face; instead of looking inward to the depths of his soul, Van turned his gaze towards sunnier climes, offering up a seamless disc of tightly composed and arranged tunes brimming with warmth and energy.
Here the R&B influence that had been part of Morrison's toolkit since his days fronting them truly came to the fore at last. "Crazy Love", "Caravan", and "Brand New Day" could have been covered by any great soul singer, even as they redefined "soul" through the filter of Morrison's eclectic sensibilities. An openhearted record full of truly inspirational moments, "Moondance" is Van at the absolute top of his game, setting the pace for everyone else to follow. Nearly every song here is a stone-cold classic, and "Moondance" has become embedded in the collective pop consciousness as one of the most important touchstones of its time.
"That was the type of band I dig," Morrison said of the Moondance sessions. "Two horns and a rhythm section — they're the type of bands that I like best." Morrison took that soul-band lineup and blended it with jazz, blues, poetry and vivid memories of his Irish childhood, until songs such as the title track, "And It Stoned Me" and "Caravan" felt like a lucid dream. On the sprightly "Everyone," Morrison turns the title over and over in his mouth, not scatting so much as searching for the sound of magic. One song, "Into the Mystic," serves as an apt summary: To listen to the album is to get your passport stamped for Morrison's world of ecstatic visions." - www.rollingstone.com

"'Into the Mystic' is one of Morrison's warmest ballads, an Otis Redding-style reverie with acoustic guitar and horns. The lyrics are truly mysterious: "People say, 'What does this mean?' said Morrison. 'A lot of times I have no idea what I mean. That's what I like about rock & roll — the concept. Like Little Richard — what does he mean? You can't take him apart; that's rock & roll to me.'" - Rolling Stone

VAN MORRISON TUPELO HONEY - AN AUDIOPHILE MASTERPIECE - OUT OF PRINT EUROPEAN PRESSING
THE 180 GRAM TUPELO HONEY - LP 180 Gram Vinyl of Tupelo Honey, an album by Northern Irish singer-songwriter Van Morrison, released in 1971. The hymn-like title track has been an enduring hit, as well as the other single released from the album, "Wild Night". The namesake for the album is a varietal honey produced from the flowers of the tupelo tree in southeastern US. The cover photograph showed Janet, his wife at the time, on horseback and Van walking alongside. Part of Van Morrison's living-in-the-country-and-taking-life-easy series of early-1970s albums, Tupelo Honey is full of the organic mix of soul, folk, blues and rock that was his signature sound at the time. The freewheeling "Wild Night" bursts at the seams with the pure joy of living, carried along by R&B horns and Morrison's own soulful invocations.

Van Morrison's 1970 release "His Band and The Street Choir" had a more relaxed sound than its predecessor "Moondance." This release was just one of many critically acclaimed releases for the equal parts blue-eyed soul shouter and wild eyed poet sorcerer.

BLOWIN YOUR MIND! -
THESE ORIGINAL EUROPEAN LIMITED EDITION PRESSING NOW OUT OF PRINT & BECOMING TREMENDOUSLY RARE. Which includes the 49th best song in Rock N Roll history Morrison's Classic Brown Eyed Girl
After a young Van Morrison left his Belfast R&B-pop band Them following a couple of U.K. hits in "Gloria" and "Here Comes the Night," American producer-songwriter Bert Berns brought him to New York for 48 hours in early 1967 to record the tracks that would become BLOWIN’ YOUR MIND.
Berns died shortly thereafter, but the tracks he cut included the song that launched Morrison's solo career--the U.S. top 10 hit "Brown Eyed Girl." - voted the 49th Best Single of All-Time.
Most of these songs have been released on early Morrison compilations, including some on this same label. Originally produced by Epic/distributed by Sony Music on Bang Records in 1968 - this is a repressed version in its original format with great psychedelic artwork on the cover.
Contains some youthful vocal magic on the soul standard "He Ain't Give You None," the stark and graphic "TB Sheets," and the strange and wonderful "Goodbye Baby (Baby Goodbye)."
This was undoubtedly Morrison's first period of transition. After the release of BLOWIN’ YOUR MIND! he moved to Cambridge, Massachusetts, to work on his next album, the landmark Astral Weeks.
Tracks include: Brown Eyed Girl - He Ain’t Give You None - T.B. Sheets - Spanish Rose - Goodbye Baby - Ro Ro Rosey - Who Drove The Red Sports Card and Midnight Special.
