Brief Artist & Album Info: Van Morrison’s sixth post Them album and another comparable to the masterpiece Astral Weeks. The famously distinctive cover with Morrison looking a little forlorn and troubled sitting on the church steps, his trousers even have a hole. But the contents within this lovely cover must rank as amongst the finest he ever made. Again like Astral Weeks, this album is difficult to pigeon-hole, it’s a blend of rock, soul and late-night jazz, Saint Dominic’s Preview remains one of his most enigmatic releases. The opener ‘Jackie Wilson Said’, is an uptempo and vibrant beginning, his tribute to the great soul singer that was later covered very successfully by Dexy’s Midnight Runners – most will know this famous song. But the two long compositions dominate this fabulous album. 12-String acoustic guitar driven epics ‘Listen to the Lion’ (Ronnie Montrose accompanies) and the totally sublime ‘Almost Independence Day’, where again Morrison’s vocal improvisations are back to their stunning best. Alternatively whispering, then louder, pleading and extolling. An album of intoxicating and hypnotic performances and its relative failure commercially, initially anyway, again was surprising. Beautifully recorded with a clear and detailed sound, ‘Van the Man’, now Sir Van Morrison, could almost be in the room with you here. This copy does it full justice, a very impressive example and a lovely clean pressing. Any real music lover and vinyl collector will really enjoy this one. The cover is really lovely with very little to fault, and never an easy one. The inclusion of the an original insert is the icing on the cake, when repressed, few even included it at all. One of the greatest songwriters ever and this one is one of his very best – even so-called ‘non-fans’, cannot fail to be moved by this evergreen classic.

Cover Grade and Format: EXCELLENT(++): a single unlaminated format with matt surfaces. Printed and made in England by Shorewood. Includes the elusive insert sheet and original white inner sleeve.

Cover Front: One of the classic fronts and here looking superb. Any blemishes are bordering on minuscule, with any edge creases super-fine and faint, any rub traces the same. This retains lovely freshness with no sticker marks or fading. A front to hold and enjoy.

Cover Back: Largely the same again, the lack of ringwear a real plus-factor on this one.

Top Edge: Very straight with barely any hint of wear.

Bottom Edge: Almost the same with just a small rub near the right corner, little else at all.

Right Edge(s), and Type: Clean, quite sharp with little wear, any thickening or burring gentle and light as seen more critically viewed end-on. Record enters on this edge and guaranteed untrimmed or enhanced.

Spine and Text: Close to perfect: solid, straight with no compression or wear. All text fully present and unworn as seen in my close-up pictures.

Corners: The spine pair are fantastic, pretty much perfect as-made. The right ones have small tip rubs with very fine shape retained.

Cover Summary: A very strong all-round example of this classic, but wear-prone 1970’s cover, one that will prove very difficult to find better. This still attractive, fresh item should please many, if not most collectors.

The Inner Sleeve: EXCELLENT(++): with no real wear, any ageing or darkening minimal and faint. Any creasing, gentle and light and no edge splits. Both window circles crisp and undamaged – there are no repairs or enhancements either.

The Insert: MINT(–): a gatefold insert with band details and credits, no lyrics. This is guaranteed original and has barely aged with no damage, barely creased with no tears. Folded the merest fraction off-square, but this is nit-picking almost for the same of it.

Vinyl Condition/Visual Grading: EXCELLENT(+): with little more than a ultra fine and faint hairlines as seen under bright angled light. A super visual copy that is very clean with excellent shine and quite solidly pressed. A copy hardly played played on all the evidence. Visually a super record that should please most collectors.

I do NOT play snippets or joining grooves to check for sound quality and quietness – I play from the beginning to end via clinically revealing B&W speakers that include the legendary tweeter from their awesome Nautilus range that reveals every blemish or minuscule sound present on any record.]

Sound Quality and Audio Grading: This beautiful A1/B1 green label example plays even above it’s high visual grading with barely anything to fault. Strong, distortion-free sound, all frequencies are sharp and clear - sound quality is very high with a wide dynamic range and very detailed sound. Any surface sounds are minimal indeed and no pops or clicks were noted and this is an exceptional clean pressing. Beautifully recorded with super detail and delivery of that classic vocal, few copies will outperform this impressive one I feel sure. Both channels are clean and sharp, I am certain this record has been played very lightly and has been clearly carefully handled. Nothing spoilt my pleasure when play-grading this wonderful record. It will prove very difficult to find significantly better and can be strongly recommended.

SOME GENERAL GUIDES TO WEAR AND CONDITIONS TO HELP YOU DECIDE

My Use of Description Terminology: Surface Marks = Superficial, usually light marks, hairlines or light scuffs that rarely sound. Scratch = a needle mark that goes below the record’s surface, some will sound, some will not, my play-grade will inform. Original = a record that has been pressed with the first label design which does NOT necessarily mean a very first pressed record. First Pressing = A record that I believe or know to be a genuine very first pressed record. I do not claim to always know for sure, and that’s why I state the stamper and matrix numbers if at all possible, for those who claim to know what they all mean, the information is there for the collector to decide. I prefer to use terms like ‘Early Copy’ rather than ‘First Pressing’ if I am not totally sure. Surface Sound = Mild, light sound, usually light crackle or similar. Distortion = Break up of the actual sound caused by groove wear or damage from a chipped stylus – the most undesirable form of unwanted sound, vintage mono records were the most prone to this happening but not exclusively so. The symptoms of distortion are high frequency clipping, moderate constant crackle or an echo type sound quality. Violin, piano and vocals are most prone to groove-wear distortion. Feathering = Fraying or softening of the entry edge of a cover. Covers with feathered entrance edges are more likely to have had the actual record inserted and removed more than a non-feathered, sharp-edged cover which are always far more attractive. Set Off, actually a printer’s term for dark ink leaving mild residue on pale or white ink when rested upon. e.g. when a gatefold cover has black ink closed against white, this can leave some black residue on the pale area – this is mostly unavoidable or course.

The Argument for Vinyl Original sound and mix (mono mixes are rarely available on CD), high quality sound on clean copies (played on a hi-end dedicated analogue system – breathtaking sound!), beautiful, large format covers, artwork, inserts and even full size posters etc; huge investment potential, and the pleasure of owning ‘the real thing’.
