The eventual, released version of this, their first single, came out in August 1987, but what you (and no-one else apart from the band) never knew (it's remained undocumented after all), is that there was an earlier version recorded at Paradise Studios (at the same time as the 'B' side)...it got to test pressing stage, in very early 1987, but for reasons I cannot remember (I owned and ran the Phantom label back then), the 'A' side version was not deemed worthy enough by the band, for release...so they went into EMI's 301 Studios and re-recorded it, again with John Bee producing, and punched out the version that was eventually released several months later (way behind initial schedule). We were given 6 of these first test pressings only, and one each were given to Simon, Mark, and Cameron, of the band, and I retained 3...and this is one of them. A cover had already been designed and I mocked up a photo-copied version of it to house the 3 test pressings I owned (the band's three had just plain white sleeves)...and this copy comes with that cover - of which literally only 3 exist...in case you're not keeping up [ said nicely d:-) ]. This cover has different wording, of course, regarding recording details (and also re some of the 'Thanks' section)...and I've included pictures here of the relevant back segments, of both this and the released version, for you to compare. The original art was destroyed at the time so the 3 TP's I kept will always remain the only ones with the photocopied original cover.
This is your rare chance to own one. Also your ONLY chance - I sold one a couple of months ago here, and this is the last one I'll let go.
…now back to the music itself…both sides of this are UTTERLY AWESOME and melodic-as-all-HELL!…compared at the time, in very glowing terms, to Husker Du...plus “Changes”-era TSOL...and the Replacements…but the most obvious is “Candy Apple Grey”-era Husker Du…in fact the Chainsaws covered that album’s “Don’t Want To Know If You Are Lonely” live…never less than an awesome version too…but this is one of the truly GREAT Australian punk 45’s of the 80’s…no question. The version here of the 'A' side is definitely different, most noticeably so during the spoken word TS Eliot poem segment. (The 'B' side of both this and the released version are the same.)
