Label/Format: Atlantic, original red and maroon (‘plum’ format) with matt surfaces that have a gentle hint of texturing.

Label Conditions: Both little short of immaculate, clean, fresh and highly attractive with hardly a spindle trace to be seen. The only ‘blemish’, if indeed you can call it that, is the very first owner put his first initial ‘P’, very finely and neatly on his records. This seen below the word ATLANTIC a the 9 o’clock position. This entire album is immaculate, the owner very particular indeed, cover-protected and stored with precision and care. The record in archive condition with sound to match.

Brief Info: A near legendary debut, especially highly regarded in the United States. Unusual, this band hardly went by the rules, almost all the songs are slowed-down classic covers – two of which are Beatles songs. This broke new ground blending psychedelia with a new hard rock sound, quite like label colleagues MC5. It proved their most successful album but was not a major seller in the UK. Thus copies are never easily found, and this one in truly immaculate condition.

Cover Grade and Format: MINT(–): a single format with front laminate, this covers the top and bottom folds, but spine is left uncovered (but remains unworn). The back is matt and smooth. Printed and made in England by Ernest J. Day with ‘Patent Pending’ text. Includes the 1967 date-coded inner sleeve.

Lamination & Front: Firstly, my grading does not take into account of the original owner putting a date of August 1968 on the back, which is very fine and neat indeed. This album came from a connoisseur’s collection and how beautifully they have been looked after. Put simply, this front reminds of new, and at 50-years-old, that is little short of remarkable, this front has barely aged at all with cover-protection from new. The laminate has stunning shine, freshness and clarity with hardly any creasing or dulling. This takes you back to the record shops of the 1960s and will prove beyond difficult to better, or even match.

Cover Back: Again stunning, again totally blowing away its considerable age, this has barely anything to fault bar (arguably) the neat date and year the original placed at the very bottom edge. It would almost be an insult to mention the ultra faint traces of discolouration on the very edges, try finding a better one.

Top Edge: Thin, but still straight and smoothly laminated, one microscopic surface chip being critical.

Bottom Edge: Practically the same with no chips.

Right Edge(s), and Type: Clean, mostly sharp with any thickening little and light as mostly seen viewed end-on. A gentle burr trace on the front. Record enters on this edge that is guaranteed untrimmed or enhanced.

Spine and Text: Again very thin, so a little gentle bowing (corner curl) is so very difficult to avoid totally, that a trait of thin card laminated covers from this time. Solid, reasonably straight with slight compression. All text is perfect and unworn, this centred a little low on the narrow depth. The white surface still exactly that, white, not discoloured and unworn. Rarely will text on these exposed spines remain fully intact and strong.

Corners: Any tip rubs tiny and light, excellent shape retained with no knocks.

Cover Summary: A very strong all-round example of this very fragile 1970’s cover, one that will prove very difficult to find much better. This beautiful item should please many collectors.

The Inner Sleeve: EXCELLENT: only marked down for the usual darkening of the seam area adhesive. Hardly creased with two immaculate window circles and the polylining fresh and still quite clear. No edge splits or repairs. This is coded 097 (September 1967).

Vinyl Condition/Visual Grading: MINT(–): arguably better. A superb visual copy that is very clean with fantastic fine shine and heavily pressed. A copy hardly played on all the evidence with any surface traces less than minuscule, even as seen critically under bright light. Again visually in archive condition, this has clearly not seen light-of-date or a turntable for decades. Visually a stunning, and scarce record that should please most collectors.

Album Played For Grading: Yes. [I play ALL records I offer before submitting to Ebay, also the record is played in its entirety unless clearly stated otherwise. I do NOT play snippets or joining grooves to check for sound quality and quietness – I play from the beginning to end via clinically revealing equipment, all listed further down.]

Sound Quality and Audio Grading: This somewhat groundbreaking album plays largely up to it’s high visual grading with hardly anything to fault. Not had a copy of this for years, and I have never seen a better example. This offers strong, distortion-free sound, all frequencies are sharp and clear – sound quality is very high with a wide dynamic range and very detailed sound. The cover states its a high fidelity recording with some technical detail. Any surface sounds are minimal indeed, but this does have some very quiet passages so the odd sporadic gentle tick is near impossible to avoid. A warm and powerful mono mix and production, this is an exceptional clean pressing with no tracking issues*. Few available copies will match or outperform this very early pressing I feel sure. Both channels are clean and sharp played on a revealing stereo system, I am certain this record has been played very lightly, if indeed at all, and has been superbly stored, protected and carefully handled, almost certainly in a non-smoking environment. Nothing of any real note spoilt my pleasure when play-grading this wonderful record. An album largely overlooked here in the UK, most attention was drawn to Sgt Pepper and gems like this fell by the wayside. It will prove beyond difficult to find better and can be strongly recommended.

* As played-graded on a high-end Linn LP12 Sondek turntable with Ittok Mk II arm and Ortofon Quintet Black moving coil cartridge tracking at 2.2 grams. Records are a ‘contact’ format, and few will avoid the odd minor sound blemish.

SOME GENERAL GUIDES TO WEAR AND CONDITIONS TO HELP YOU DECIDE

My Use of Description Terminology: Surface Marks = Superficial, usually light marks, hairlines or light scuffs that rarely sound. Scratch = a needle mark that goes below the record’s surface, some will sound, some will not, my play-grade will inform. Original = a record that has been pressed with the first label design which does NOT necessarily mean a very first pressed record. First Pressing = A record that I believe or know to be a genuine very first pressed record. I do not claim to always know for sure, and that’s why I state the stamper and matrix numbers if at all possible, for those who claim to know what they all mean, the information is there for the collector to decide. I prefer to use terms like ‘Early Copy’ rather than ‘First Pressing’ if I am not totally sure. Surface Sound = Mild, light sound, usually light crackle or similar. Distortion = Break up of the actual sound caused by groove wear or damage from a chipped stylus – the most undesirable form of unwanted sound, vintage mono records were the most prone to this happening but not exclusively so. The symptoms of distortion are high frequency clipping, moderate constant crackle or an echo type sound quality. Violin, piano and vocals are most prone to groove-wear distortion. Feathering = Fraying or softening of the entry edge of a cover. Covers with feathered entrance edges are more likely to have had the actual record inserted and removed more than a non-feathered, sharp-edged cover which are always far more attractive. Set Off, actually a printer’s term for dark ink leaving mild residue on pale or white ink when rested upon. e.g. when a gatefold cover has black ink closed against white, this can leave some black residue on the pale area – this is mostly unavoidable or course.

The Argument for Vinyl Original sound and mix (mono mixes are rarely available on CD), high quality sound on clean copies (played on a hi-end dedicated analogue system – breathtaking sound!), beautiful, large format covers, artwork, inserts and even full size posters etc; huge investment potential, and the pleasure of owning ‘the real thing’.
