VARIOUS: STAY IN SCHOOL – RARE STAX PROMO LP A-11 (1967)
1967 promo LP from the legendary Stax label in glorious Mono. It contains personal messages from the artists, top tunes and special lock grooves.
Only 200 copies produced.

From a historical perspective and even at under half an hour, this is a fascinating listen for all lovers of classic R&B, with contents split between songs and brief "stay in school" messages from top Stax talent: Otis Redding ("The Hucklebuck"), Carla Thomas ("I Want to Be Your Baby"), Eddie Floyd ("Holding on with Both Hands"), William Bell ("It's Happening All Over"), Sam & Dave ("My Reason for Living"), Booker T. & the MG's ("Soul Sanction"), and the Mar-Keys' ("Plantation Inn"). Earnest collectors will note that both Redding's -- which is sung -- and Sam & Dave's "Announcement" have been issued as bonus filler on the respective Otis! (1994) and Sweat 'n' Soul (1993) anthologies. Of the remaining spoken tracks, the most interesting title is "Group Discussion." For roughly three minutes, Sam Moore, David Prater, Booker T. Jones, Al Bell, David Porter, and Mack Rice gather for a presumably unscripted "bull session" concerning the importance of staying enrolled and active in education. Another participant is Deanie Parker-- who at the time worked behind the scenes at Stax and as of 2008 was the president and executive director of Stax's Soulsville museum. The album was only pressed in monaural, meaning that the version of "Soul Sanction" included here is a rare mono edit, clocking in at two and a half minutes as opposed to the more common stereo track which is a good 40 seconds longer.
