The influence of the Woodstock phenomenon wasn’t restricted to North America, as huge open-air festivals soon became de rigueur in many countries around the world. Australia’s offering to this important cultural statement was Sunbury, just thirty short minutes from Melbourne and an event that became the biggest outdoor festival held in Australia during the seventies. Unlike Woodstock, however, the contributing talent was restricted to home-grown acts (New Zealand inclusive), resulting in this adventurous triple album, appropriating, almost by default, the mantle of an important, nay essential, document of the antipodean rock scene during the early seventies.

With a bohemian mixture of folk, blues and progressive rock, the album showcases a number of exceptional artists that due to regional and logistical difficulties failed to find an audience outside their own territory. Naturally, the vibe is very pastoral - it’s not difficult to imagine the dry heat, a large dusty field and legions of beer-swilling rock fans. Spread out over the six-sides there are bona fide collectible nuggets, none more so than Blackfeather’s ‘I’m Gonna Leave You’, a bluesy shuffle with some exceptional lead guitar playing and one of the most hypnotic grooves ever committed to a live recording. Carson, also in the blues rock bag, acquit themselves adequately, with a trad, but not dated, workout, whilst, the unusually monikered, Mighty Mouse deliver a lengthy (ten-minute), but never boring, progressive blues assault.

Meanwhile, over in the land of proto-heavy metal, both the Aztecs and the Coloured Balls can be found turning up their amplifiers to eleven and beyond. The latter provide a thermo-nuclear interpretation of Chuck Berry’s ‘Johnny B Goode’, with chainsaw guitars literally exploding out of the speakers; imagine Status Quo jamming with the Ramones, for a partial comparison. The Aztecs, fronted by Billy Thorpe, are equally as Neanderthal in their sonic assault and, if it is more reassuring, blessed with slightly more finesse. Other participants include prog rockers Madder Lake, Mackenzie Theory, Healing Force, Sid Rumpo and Bakery.

This is a a rare original pressing with the fantastic highly complex tri-fold textured cover.

This auction is part of a fantastic collection of seventies rock which I was lucky enough to acquire. Most of these records were stored with the utmost care and sparsely played. Some were possibly never played or may have been for just a handful of times.

Vinyl: Superb clean and shiny condition - all six sides pretty much unplayed. No spindle marks and no other signs of any use. Grades as top shop fresh MINT!

Cover: Light signs of use. Issued in a beautifully illustrated and highly complex tri-fold textured cover.
