Description

This record was given to me by the late David Lee Quick (10/9/1945-4/1/2024), a well-known Wichita-based artist, photographer, writer, social activist and cultural archivist, in March 2021.
As a young man in the 1960s David traveled widely and attended (and later taught) university in Pennsylvania; along the way he met and befriended such luminaries as Lou Reed (who photographed David and took him to the Factory to meet Andy Warhol), Abbie Hoffman (with whom he crashed in California), Max Ernst (under whom he studied art), President Jimmy Carter (for whom he helped compile a study on aging artists), architect Louis Kahn, painters Alice Neel and Esteban Vicente, Dada collagist Louis Hirshman, and a number of the Beat Generation figures, including Allen Ginsberg, Peter Orlovsky, Charley Plymell and William S. Burroughs. Over the years David kept up with many of these folks, with Burroughs being one of the easiest to visit in person after his move to Lawrence, Kansas, just a couple hours' drive from Wichita, in the 1980s.
On or around New Year's Day 1994, David visited Burroughs at his home, just two months after Kurt Cobain's widely-documented pilgrimage there on October 20, 1993. (Cobain and Burroughs had collaborated long-distance on a recording project, but until this occasion, had not met in person. It would be their only meeting, as Cobain took his own life soon after, in April 1994.) David said that during his New Year's visit, Burroughs pulled out this record and told him that it had been given to him by Cobain, then offered it as a gift to David, who happily accepted. (See attached photos for printout of email with details.)
Cobain passed four months later, followed by Burroughs in 1997, and eventually I got to know David Quick through our mutual associations with the local music and art scene in Wichita. In 2006 I moved into a house just a couple blocks from his, and we became good neighbors. We grew closer in his last years, and he started pulling selections from his record collection and bringing them to me any time he dropped by our house; he hadn't spun an album at his own place in years, and knew I was a record collector/dealer, so he was happy to see them get some play, or for me to make a few bucks listing them for sale.
David's health took a sharp downturn in 2022, and my young sons and I pitched in to help tidy his yard and do other sundry chores when he was admitted to a long-term care facility. The last time I saw him was at our local library branch, where he invited people to meet him while he was having his taxes done by a volunteer. Though extremely ill, he very happy to be out of the "sickhouse," and I was but one of a number of people who turned up to see him that day.
David Lee Quick died on April Fool's Day 2024, a final wink from one of the most jovial, fun-loving people I ever knew. In the wake of his passing, my boys and I helped in the effort to take care of and rehome his beloved cats Frankie Blue Eyes and Lucky, and assisted a bit with the arduous task of helping clear out the hoard of books, art, and physical archival media that filled his house top to bottom.
Since I received this record four years ago I think I have spun it twice. I am not entirely sure it has seen more than one or two more spins since it came from the factory. The cover shows very well, with a couple very minor blemishes. Contains the exact same 19 songs as the Sub Pop compilation album "Way of the Vaselines," released the same year, though minor variations in some of the song titles exist between the two ("Jesus Wants Me for a Sunbeam" vs "Jesus Doesn't Want Me for a Sunbeam," "Teenage Superstars" vs "Teenage Jesus Superstar," etc.). A great collection of tunes, though I assume the cultural historical provenance here will likely the major selling point for most bidders.
DO NOT BID if you do not intend to pay immediately upon auction end. I ship vinyl regularly (hundreds of successful shipments) and will take care to ship this particular item extra securely with insurance covering the amount determined by the successful bid.
