This is the original 1970 issue on Philips of Vashti Bunyan’s celebrated debut LP “Just Another Diamond Day”, produced by Joe Boyd. Supporting musicians include Robin Williamson of the Incredible String Band, and Dave Swarbrick and Simon Nicol of Fairport Convention, with strings arranged by Nick Drake’s arranger Robert Kirby. I have never seen an authoritative figure but I understand that it is generally thought that no more than 1,000 copies of the first issue were pressed, and the LP was never reissued by Philips, remaining out of print until the recent CD and LP transfers.
The gatefold sleeve is unlaminated and although this example is sound with no tears or other outright damage, it nevertheless shows appreciable wear. All edges have suffered considerable abrasion and both top and bottom of the right-hand section of the gatefold have seam splits, the top one approximately 20mm and the bottom 110mm. There are various small stains, visible ringwear and creasing, and a crescent-shaped abrasion mark on the back. The spine is substantially worn to the extent that only a small portion of the text is now readable. In addition, the previous owner has inscribed his name in ink on the back cover and above the title panel on the LH side of the gatefold. He also allowed his young son to exercise his artistic aspirations in the form of graffiti, but fortunately this is fairly minimal, consisting of some shadowing of the letter V of the front cover titles, a small drawing about 15mm across near the top edge of the front cover, and very faint “eyebrows” to two of the cows.
The record itself exhibits signs of wear and careless handling in the past – there are appreciable spindle marks to the labels and both sides have light scratches at various points on the surface, although these are not immediately obvious upon visual inspection and, except in a couple of isolated instances, do not manifest themselves as repeated clicks on playback. Nor do they cause the stylus to jump at any point, both sides of the record play through without interruption. I have cleaned the record manually using AM record cleaner (it has never, to my knowledge, been cleaned by machine) but it still plays with a significant level of surface noise and crackle throughout. However the actual sound quality is excellent, Vashti’s voice is clean and pure with no overt distortion, and the backing instruments are still startlingly realistic. In this respect, there is little difference between this copy and another which I own which has unmarked surfaces, both are a delight to listen to.
