Description
HERE'S one of those twelve-inch vinyl V-DISCS for your consideration, a particularly swinging one: DUKE ELLINGTON AND HIS ORCHESTRA play the magnificent "DIMINUENDO AND CRESCENDO IN BLUE"; on the flip, it's COUNT BASIE AND HIS ORCHESTRA, with "SENT FOR YOU YESTERDAY" and "JIMMY'S BOOGIE WOOGIE." This side features the famed Basie vocalist, "Mr. Five-By-Five," JIMMY RUSHING.
Produced by the U.S. Military during World War II and on into the early '50s, these V-Discs were distributed to soldiers, sailors and marines all across the globe, an inestimable morale booster. Since V-Discs were made of unbreakable but soft vinylite (a necessity for safe shipping), and were played on whatever primitive gear the boys in combat zones could muster, any V-Discs that survive usually are PTSD-afflicted, battle-scarred veterans themselves! Fortunately, this one came through the war relatively unscathed (E-).
V-Discs also were important as the ONLY records produced during the big Musicians' Union strike of '42 - '44. Much original material came out this way. I DON'T know if these Ellington - Basie performances are from issued records, or were recorded especially for V-Disc.
This original twelve-inch vinyl ca. 1944 V-Disc 534 is in amazing E- condition, considering where it might have been!

*****
These records come from my private collection, which I have been accumulating since 1967, and now am downsizing! My highest priority in these eBay auctions is to give you the best possible idea of a record’s true condition and aesthetic value. I always post at least four clear images, showing the record fore and aft, a close-up of the label, and the whole disc, warts and all. If my purple prose won’t cut it, the pictures will! Shipping is done with expert care. Your record will brave Media Mail in a stout corregated box, between four sheets of cardboard and a couple of “packers.” I hope you are amused by these descriptions, and by the quality of service being offered.
