Description
Very rare early PRE SAN FRANCISCO EARTHQUAKE box for local Edison phonograph dealer Bacigalupi in San Francisco. This box is earlier than the ones you see elsewhere on eBay and such. The prices are lower than on the later ones, with records listed at 35 cents, and concert records at 75 cents. The address is different, too, at 840 Market and 805 Kearney. The various phonographs listed for sale include the Gem, Standard, and Home phonographs, and slot versions of each, as well as the Concert phonograph. Also included is the extremely rare original lid. There is some pencil writing on the box (see photos). And inside is a brown wax cylinder from 1896 of William Jennings Bryan's famous Cross of Gold speech. Before you get excited about that, I have to say that it is moldy. Very moldy. I don't have a type-A reproducer to listen to it, but it looks bad. Oddly, sometimes the ones that look bad can play okay, but I don't know... Anyhow this recording is not by Bryan himself, anyway, and was likely recorded by Len Spencer, or his brother, right after the original address during the election of 1896.
