Although commonly designated a mezzo-soprano, Miss Berberian had an extraordinary vocal range that spanned three octaves - enough, as a critic once noted, to sing both Tristan and Isolde. She was an important fixture in the international avant-garde for more than 25 years. Composers who wrote works for Miss Berberian include Darius Milhaud, Igor Stravinsky, Hans Werner Henze, John Cage, Sylvano Bussotti and Luciano Berio, to whom she was married from 1950 until 1966. Her expertise in traditional music, combined with a remarkable collection of laughs, growls, grunts, shouts, hisses and gurgles in less traditional music, kept her services in constant demand around the world.

Miss Berberian was born in Attleboro, Mass., on July 4, 1928, to Armenian parents. Her training included courses in mime, writing and opera at Columbia and New York Universities, as well as studies in Hindu, costuming and Spanish dancing. Miss Berberian made her debut in Naples in 1957, and became famous after a 1958 Rome performance of Mr. Cage's ''Fontana Mix,'' in which she sang and shouted in five languages. She was probably best known for her performances of Mr. Berio's music, including such compositions as ''Circles,'' ''Visage,'' ''Recital I'' and ''Sequenza III.'' Made Many Recordings

Miss Berberian made many recordings, and her talents were not limited to performances of the avant-garde. In the late 1960's, she recorded an album of Beatles songs, and in 1977 she produced a generally well-regarded album of music by Claudio Monteverdi. Miss Berberian had just recorded a version of the ''Internationale'' for an Italian television program commemorating the 100th anniversary of the death of Karl Marx.

Miss Berberian's ''Stripsody,'' a multimedia composition for solo voice accompanied by humorous cartoons, dates from 1966. In 1971 she wrote a work for solo piano, ''Morsicat(h)y.'' Miss Berberian was an active teacher, and held classes at the Berkshire Music Center and around the world.

In a 1970 interview, Miss Berberian objected to her image as a ''circus freak.'' ''I'm just challenged by the difficulty and exploration of anything that hasn't been done before,'' she said.

Miss Berberian leaves one daughter, Caterina.
