Grunge is on its way back, and it would appear that Gene Gallagher (son of Liam) is helping to lead the charge. Self-proclaimed fans of Nirvana, it's not hard to hear that influence on Measly Means. It's there in the riffs, the quiet-loud dynamics and the knack for melody. Sure, it's a little cleaner than Nirvana's approach, and there are hints of the likes of Smashing Pumpkins woven through, but the intent to rock is undeniable. 'Opportunity Arising' is a more sedate, straight-ahead rock offering. It's the kind of thing Oasis would kill for these days. 'Hinge' channels the full-on blitzkrieg of Rocket From The Crypt circa Circa: Now! and largely succeeds. The downbeat, darkened tones of 'Squeeze' reveal a more introspective side to the band: not so much rock 'n' roll star as bedroom-poet angst. Unsurprisingly, Villanelle have already been making considerable waves, but it's got little to do with nepotism. They have the songs to justify the attention. Britgrunge, anyone?
