**************
This is an original vintage Discwasher D4 Record cleaning system from the early 1980s. The components are all in excellent condition and are almost like-new. This is from my own personal ‘stash’ and has been in my music room for many many years. I’ve purchased several of these pads, brushes and lots of solution over the years. Back in the day, I had many more records, turntables and music rooms than I do now and owned several discwasher systems. I even had the Zerostat 3 gun, the V.R.P. anti-static sleeves, the D’Stat II turntable mat and the stylus cleaning system with the little mirror on a stick. I WAS that record nerd 40 years ago.
I still have a massive record collection and keep my vinyl clean, but have discovered other cheaper ways to do it over the years. But, I DO still use a vintage Discwasher Pad daily with my own home-brewed solution and I still have a few spares. Nothing works better than the original.
This system is a complete ‘spare’ I had lying around and it looks to be in great condition. The Pad looks tight, clean and like new. I don’t believe I ever used this one. This is one of the very original, and expensive for the time, Discwasher systems.
This Auction includes:
The Original Pad (black bristles, red base, engraved, Nice!)
Pad Brush (Clean, straight, and stiff)
Small FULL red bottle of D4 Cleaning fluid
Small nearly full bottle of SC-2 stylus cleaning fluid
About 1/3 full larger red stock bottle of D4 Cleaning fluid
Original Storage Box in good condition
Original instruction / Sales booklet
There is an original wooden handled cleaning pad, handcrafted and finished from solid American walnut. It has the engraved name and directional arrow on one end. The middle of the wooden brush was hollowed out so that the pad cleaner brush and the bottle of solution would fit neatly and conveniently inside. Great idea, so that the 2 are always together when needed.
This is the original dark black colored brush with the red cloth material underneath. Later ones had were not as good and had grey or tan cloth under the bristles. Newer Discwasher brushes are more of a tan color and don’t clean anywhere as good as the originals.
Older, original Discwashers had angled bristles on the pad that were designed to get down into the grooves to deep clean your vinyl. It was important to use the pad in the direction indicated for it to work properly, thus the directional arrow on the end of the brush. Some of the ‘newer’ Discwasher pads don’t have the same style of directional bristles and don’t work nearly as well. Most newer record cleaning brushes don’t have this technology at all.
The classic old discwasher system was ‘improved’ by the company over time, changing some of the original features, but nothing beats a true original like this one. Some things were not meant to be messed with and this record cleaning system was one of them. Recently, the ‘Discwasher’ brand was revived by RCA, but they are a poor imitation of the original. They don’t have the directional pile built into the brush, so they don’t deep clean and ‘scoop up’ small debris. The whole point of the original system was the curved bristles that scooped up and held the dust - the newer RCA version doesn’t have them, nor do most record brushes out there.
There are many other record cleaning brushes out there on the market but most don’t do a very good job. Cheaper brushes get loose and soft with use over time and don’t clean as well. This one is clean, tight, and ready for business. As I said, nothing beats an original.
The small pad cleaning brush included and it is in excellent condition with tight bristles. It is often missing as it was easily misplaced.
I’ve included a FULL small red bottle of original D4 cleaning solution and about a third of a larger 6oz stock bottle of the red D4 solution. Plenty of fluid to clean a ton of vinyl. You only use a few drops at a time.
This is the original formula, expensive, red D4 solution. It has the flip-nozzle to make it easy to apply to the brush. Current Discwasher solution D4+ comes in a black bottle with a screw cap and doesn’t work as well. The original red D4 fluid beaded up on the brush, was odorless and somehow ‘attracted’ dust and micro particles. It left the vinyl dry and clean. The new ‘Black’ fluid smells like rubbing alcohol and is a poor substitute for the original ‘Red’ stuff.
I’ll even throw in a nearly full bottle of SC-2 stylus cleaner I had lying around.
The original cool fake wood Box and instruction booklet are here as well, making it easy to store everything nice and tidy.
