Description
This auction is for the LP "White Light/White Heat" by the Velvet Underground. This is the YELLOW LABEL version, the PROMO on Verve Records (V6-5046). Here are some of the features that make this album extremely rare:
* The front cover is the original "Skull" version. When you hold the seemingly all black cover at just the right angle, you can see a skull & crossbones in the lower left corner. This was removed for later pressings of the album.
* On the back cover the song "Here She Comes Now" is mis-labeled. It instead reads "There She Comes Now".
* The label is yellow, not the usual blue. On the label it reads "Disc Jockey Record" / "NOT FOR SALE".
The album cover and back show minor bin-wear, with the beginnings of some slight ringwear starting to show through, and the printing has probably faded a touch over the decades. This is all the result of being stored away between other records for 42 years. One small to medium area of concern is the slightly creased lower right-hand corner (see picture). It looks like that corner got bent early on, before it was stored for decades. Therefore the corner remains straight, yet retains the crease from when the bend occurs.
Other than the small bend and light binwear I've mentioned, the cover is very nice indeed, especially for being 42 years old. I'm not sure just how many of these Promo Copies are out there, but I'm sure its not a lot, and this is something ANY collector would be proud to own. The paper sleeve inside is in perfect condition. No sign of wear. It is the original Verve Records sleeve.
The record itself is in Excellent Condition. Side One is almost flawless (literally looking like it was never played), and Side Two only slightly less due to two or three superficial hairline surface scratches. They are so light that you have to get directly under a naked lightbulb to see them, but they are there nonetheless. I would use the term Near Mint, but to be safe I'll say the record is Excellent +++
So the bottom line is that I'd give the cover a 8 out of 10, and the vinyl inside a 9.25 out of 10 or better. Any collector of Velvet Underground records would be proud to own this rare "Disc Jockey Record" that was only available to radio stations at the time. This record doesn't come around that often, and is among the most elite, sought after records from the band. In collector's terms, this is most likely the rarest record I own, and it is going to be very hard to part with.
One more thing: The last time I followed an auction of this album, it went for $530. This is not an item to take lightly by me, so that is why I'm placing the starting bid so high, and not to be taken lightly by you because if its rarity. Don't be discouraged, because if you do happen to get it for around the opening price, if you fancy yourself a better salesperson than me, you could stand to make 4 times what you will pay here.
