Description
Very rare 78rpm Historic Judaic Record by Sholom Aleichem (Sholem Aleichem) . . the pen name of Solomon Rabinowitz - or Rabinovich - or Rabinovitz . . (several spelling variations) Famed Jewish writer, humorist and story-teller . . . described as one of the founding fathers of modern Yiddish literature. . . his stories, particularly Tevye's Daughters, Tevye The Dairyman, formed the basis for "Fiddler On The Roof" THE ONLY RECORDING OF HIS VOICE . . . Recorded September 7, 1915 (he died less than 8 months later, on May 13, 1916) Victor Record 60144 - Historical Recording is a One-sided 78rpm Record - The very last issue in Victor's 10-inch Purple label series Two short stories are told "In Hebrew (Yiddish)" 1. "If I Were Rothschild" 2. "A Joyful Holiday"
Interesting: - The recording was made as a "Trial" recording (B-Trial-1) and was never assigned a matrix number - The two recorded selections were "banded" on the record, separated by a small blank area between selections (like an LP) - Some brief background conversation can be heard faintly at the end of "If I Were Rothschild" - The record - Victor 60144 - wasn't released until January 1917, nine months after the artist's death
The record simply did not sell, and perhaps only a small handful of original copies survive.
