CLASSICAL RECORDING INDUSTRY
HALL of FAME - 2003 Award List
Perhaps the greatest opera recording ever made, this recording of Sir Georg Solti's Ring reaches sheer perfection in opera recording: perfection of the voices, the orchestra, the conducting, and the combination of these elements. 40 years on, it still is the absolute reference recording for Wagner's masterpiece. The landmark recording of this legendary performance. In a superb box containing 4 cap boxes.
"Whether in performance or in vividness of sound, it remains the most electrifying account on disc. This is a historic set that remains as central today as when it first appeared. "The famous Decca set, which has the trademark, "Sonicstage", remains a monument to John Culshaw's imagination in creating a mind's eye view of the work, complete with sound effects, changes of recording level and electronic enhancements." (Gramophone)
"It is ... open to question whether any studio recording of The Ring could reasonably be expected to be more atmospheric, exciting or better performed than this one. The Vienna Philharmonic are not merely prominent, but excellent, and such interpretations as Svanholm's Loge, Neidlinger's Alberich and Frick's Hagen remain immensely impressive. Above all, there is Hans Hotter, whose incomparably authoritative, unfailingly alert and responsive Wotan stands up well when compared to his earlier Bayreuth accounts. Nowhere is he more commanding than in Siegiried Act 1, where one even welcomes Stolze's mannerisms as Mime for the sparks they strike off the great bass-baritone. Earlier in this act the interplay of equally balanced instruments and voices in relatively intimate conversational phrases displays the Culshaw concept at its most convincing. However many other Rings you may have, your collection will be the poorer without this one." (Gramophone)
Now, where do I start, this set is in as good as condition as you'll ever find, it is as close to mint as it gets, (at least Mint-) the main box and the 4 cap boxes are all in excellent shape, the vinyl looks and sounds near perfect, there are no spindle marks, no scuff marks, and certainly no scratches, not even fingerprints!
I only hope I was able to capture the fullness of this set, it is not easy considering all it's parts, the sheer scope and art of the box set is breathtaking, and capturing it all in a few photos was impossible, I would have had to put it all out in book form, not to mention the space it would take up here, so I selected 6 photos I thought would represent it.
The box weighs 13 LBS, so I would have to figure shipping costs for destination after the auction, I have changed to media mail to save you some money, about $10 for most of the U.S., but will ship any way you request.
Thanks for looking, and good luck!

Mint (M): Absolutely perfect in every way - never played, possibly sealed. (Mint grading used sparingly if at all)
Near Mint (NM or M-): Near Mint is the highest grade listed in all Goldmine guides. Many dealers won't give a grade higher than this, implying (perhaps correctly) that no record is ever truly perfect. The record shows no obvious signs of wear. Lp should look new, just purchased. No creases, folds, seam splits or visual defects.
Very Good Plus (VG +): Very Good Plus will show signs that it was played, and otherwise handled by a previous owner who took good care of it. Record surfaces may show slight signs of wear and may have scuffs or light scratches that don't affect one's listening experience. (Slight warps that do not affect the sound are OK)
Very Good (VG): Many of the defects found in VG + will be more pronounced on a VG disc. Surface noise will be evident upon playing, especially in soft passages and during intros and fades, but will not overpower the music otherwise. Groove wear will start to be noticeable, as with light scratches that will affect the sound. This is the lowest price grade used by Goldmine listings.
