Born in Florida, where he was stricken with polio as a young child, Walter Jackson spent his young adulthood in Detroit, where he never let his need for crutches prevent him from performing whenever he could, and by the time Columbia Records signed him and relocated him to Chicago in the early '60s, Jackson had developed into a thoroughly professional singer with an incredibly controlled and emotive baritone. Placed on Columbia's OKeh subsidiary and given songs to work with from songwriters like the great Curtis Mayfield, Jackson quickly became the epitome of what was then called big-city soul, turning out records marked by strong production, orchestration, horns, and full massed backup vocals. His voice was so strong, however, that it easily became the central anchor in any production he was involved with, and there really is no singer in the history of Soul, uptown or otherwise, quite like Walter Jackson. This is a wonderful set and, given the quality on display here, it is truly amazing that Jackson didn't enjoy more high chart action than he did. His voice and approach, which really had more in common with singers like Nat King Cole than the deep soul singers of the day, anticipates the so-called uptown soul movement by some three decades, and if soul singers can be said to croon, well, Jackson invented the technique. The It's All Over album was itself cobbled together from whatever singles and B-sides OKeh had on hand when Jackson's version of the title tune, Curtis Mayfield's gorgeous "It's All Over," went Top Ten on the R&B charts in 1965, but largely because of Jackson's huge, steady vocals, the album now seems much more unified in concept than it actually was. Not surprisingly, some of the best songs here were written by Mayfield, including the aforementioned "It's All Over," and the brilliant "That's What Mama Say" It would be unfair to think of Jackson as simply a Mayfield interpreter, though, since whatever he sang he made completely his own. Nearly forgotten these days, Jackson is due for a rediscovery: It's All Over is a great start.

Walter Jackson - who was a paraplegic -- and boldly shown with clutches on the cover of one of his albums (a gesture which - in retrospect - must have been a massively courageous act in the mid-1960's ) -- was not an explosive, dynamic, dramatic stage performer in the James Brown or Wilson Pickett vein (this would have been impossible in light of his physical challenge). On the contrary, he was the R&B crooner in the best tradition of Billy Eckstine, Nat King Cole, Bobby Blue Bland or Sam Cooke. Endowed with an impossibly deep, resonant-as-a-bell baritone, Walter could easily sing a phone bill and it would not matter: until his untimely death some ten years ago, Jackson was a heir to the great American crooning tradition. The album contains what many believe to be the single finest soul ballad of the 1960: the gorgeous, soaring, deeply tragic, almost spiritual title track, plus many, many more. THE RECORD

(a)          WE GRADE THE VINYL AS NEAR MINT. The original luster is very much intact, and the vinyl shines and sparkles almost like new.

(b)            The record is pressed on a beautiful, thick, inflexible vinyl, which was usually used for the first or very early pressings. Usually, the sound on such thick vinyl pressings is full-bodied, vivid, and even dramatic. Do not expect to obtain such a majestic analog sound from a digital recording!

(c)             Stereo  pressing of this title is much rarer, and by far more preferable to its mono  counterpart. The mix is more graphic, the sound resolution more precise, and the channel separation (which does not exist on mono version) adds a whole new dimension to the music. Also, the stereo mixes are (by definition) somewhat different than on the mono version. We estimate that mono copies of this album outnumber stereo copies  by a ratio of at least 10:1.

(d)          Of course, this is a full-bodied ANALOG recording, and not an inferior, digital recording!!!

THE COVER IS NICE --- ABOUT EXCELLENT OR VERY GOOD++ (VG++).

The following flaws or imperfections are noted on the cover:

-         Cover has a small stamp with a name of the previous owner on both panels (one on each side)

-         Cover shows JUST A HINT of yellowing on both sides, apparently from aging.

-         Cover has a few tiny wrinkles along the spine   (nothing significant)

-         Cover has one corner slightly dinged (nothing significant)
