WARHORSE - Red Sea ORIG Vertigo Swirl LP 6360 066 (UK, 1972)

Happy to present the 2nd and best Warhorse LP on original UK Swirl, the harder to find of the 2 Warhorse Lps on this label. Remember this was Nick Simper’s band after first leaving Deep Purple, and it has all the hallmarks of that early Purple, organ-heavy sound.

The original heavy gatefold sleeve should sit comfortably with a higher grade, above average Swirl collection. It sits completely flat with no warping, dishing or rippling. It’s unlaminated and except for small, tiny creases from the spine and edges (not many), is completely UNCREASED. There’s only mild (10-20%) wear along top and bottom edges, while the spine is strong and unspoilt but shows a little rubbing and a tiny area of paper loss at the bottom. The corners have remaines strong but are slightly blunted, with the bottom left corner showing the most rubbing but still looking presentable. No real ring impression on the front and just a light patch of wear along the contour of the disc at the bottom of the rear sleeve. There’s a few foxing spots on the rear also. NO splits or tears! Inside the gate is very fresh, with just very light rubbing along top and bottom edges. Soft crease to top right. Opening edges still 85% strong with hardly any softening. All in all I’d say this is well above average for a Swirl gatefold without laminate and grades confidently at EX-.

The labels are a very nice pair showing NO writing or dirt/residue. Very light spindle is not instantly noticeable and not extensive. Again above average labels.

The medium heavy vinyl is very pleasing but shows around 4 thin hairlines, a patch of tiny surface scratches and a few very light scuffs. There’s a couple of surface spots on the b-side, but none of these slight cosmetic gripes affects the audio which is really clear, clean and unimpeded. The record has been very carefully listened to and all I heard were three light ticks on S1/T2, 1 click on S1/T3 (I had to concentrate to pick these up!) and a little light surface mainly on Side “ and only noticeable during the quieter sections. Other than that, it’s a beautiful play with near silent run-ins and also quietness between tracks. Visually a genuine VG+, but a true EX for the audio which has held up very well indeed.
