Warhorse : Warhorse A2 / B2 1st Press

This first pressing is exceptional in every way!  Having played every track in full I can confidently say the audio is 'as new' from start to finish with no interference.  I know that is a bold statement to make but this vinyl has been so well preserved and that is reflected in the sonic quality on offer here.  The clarity, depth, power and resonance of the audio is STUNNING and the only background is one very minor static tick on S2.  This is a FINAL UPGRADE archive pressing and is easily the finest example of this classic album that I have ever encountered.  I cannot stress enough just how perfect the audio is and there is no distortion either as you approach the end of each side.  The vinyl is very impressive visually and has certainly not been overplayed.  Criminally underrated at the time they really should have gone on to bigger things but at least it is recognised as a classic hard / progressive rock album today.

The cover is in lovely condition with only very minimal wear and just look at how pristine the inside is, it is so rarely seen as clean as that!  The front cover just has one small sticker removal mark but it is only minor.  The original swirl inner has also been preserved so well and remains in superb condition.

This is also a genuine first press as the Side B label has the large Swirl logo, VERTIGO is written below the spindle hole and the credits are below the track titles.

Visual description

The vinyl is in great condition and still has a very impressive glossy sheen with no marks or scratches.  All I can see under a strong light are some very faint hairlines and just one on S2 that is a little more obvious but even then you can only see it if you hold the vinyl at a certain angle.  The run out grooves are very clean and the Vertigo labels do not have very much spindle wear.  The only downside is that S2 does have D.J. stamped on it but that is better than a written name of course!

Play grading

The quiet organ intro on 'Vulture Blood' plays with stunning clarity which is a genuine rarity as it so often has some interference I find.  There is no background static just one very light static tick.  A superb start!  As the volume increases the first you notice is how strong and deep the audio is - typical of the Vertigo pressings of course - and then Holt's opening vocal plays with that usual raw quality and with no interference.  It continues to play with outstanding sonic quality and the mid instrumental is a case in point - wow it plays well!  As it ends the brief silent 'moment' is exactly that, totally silent and then the final vocal is as good as the first and the fade out has no background at all.  A Mint- start to this classic album.

The entire bass heavy intro on 'No Chance' plays with sublime precision with not even a single dust tick and then Holt's first vocal is of the same high end standard.  It continues to play with exceptional quality and Holt's superb vocal is more than matched by the superb musicianship behind him, Poole's drumming especially is incredible!  I cannot put into words just how fantastic this version is!  The end instrumental is so powerful and the depth on the audio, I cannot fault it.  Right through to the final note this in Mint in every sense of the word.

The staccato intro on 'Burning' again demonstrates how well this vinyl has been looked after and the first 'vocal' passage can also be described 'as new'.  It continues in the same precise way with no intrusion and as always Holt's voice lends itself perfectly to this number.  Every vocal and instrumental section play with such dynamic power and depth and nowhere is that more obvious than during Peck's incredible solo towards the end.  I am again 100% confident in grading this as Mint as there is no interference from start to finish.

'St Louis' ends the side with unrivalled clarity, definition and power and more power!  Despite being so high octane there is no inner groove distortion and it could not play any better.  A phenomenal finish to the side and another MINT track.  Audio does not get better than this!

'Ritual' plays with genuine quality from the word go and with that by now familiar deep rich tone.  The opening vocal is faultless and it proceeds in the same way with no intrusion.  Simper's bass is so high in the mix and adds so much to the overall sonic quality.  Peck's mid solo is incredible and the remainder plays with stunning precision and Holt's vocal is no exception to that!  Superb power, definition and resonance throughout and Mint is again the only grade I can give.

The quiet acoustic intro on 'Solitude' plays beautifully without any background and the 'choral' vocal is so clean and precise.  Peck's delicate solo is of the same standard and Holt's entire opening vocal section is perfect.  I keep going on about his vocal abilities but it matches so well to the Warhorse sound and especially on this classic track, it has an almost operatic quality.  The mid instrumental is 'as new' and the rest of the track is of the same exact standard.  The clarity and power of the audio is just astonishing and it is no exaggeration to say this is 'as new' from the first note to the last.  The sonic quality is of the highest calibre and yep the long fade out has no background either.  Mint

The very quiet intro from Wilson on 'Woman Of The Devil' has not one dust tick and Peck's inclusions are just as impressive.  As it builds the power and depth of the audio is STUNNING!  The next part of the instrumental is equally as strong then the opening vocal sections have no interference either.  The mid instrumental plays like the vinyl has never been on a turntable before (like the rest of the album!) and Holt's final vocal work and backing from the rest of the band is again so powerful and deep and there is no distortion.  Another Mint track to end this classic album.

In summary this first pressing plays to a standard you rarely find today, I think I can safely say that.  It is a FINAL UPGRADE archive album of that I have no doubt and that is because it is 'as new' from start to finish with literally no interference.  I've just looked back at my audio grading and can see I have only graded one track, 'Vulture Blood' as Mint- due to one minor static tick, all the others are Mint!  I have sold maybe 4 or 5 of these down the years but this is easily the most STUNNING example I have ever listened to.  The clarity and depth of the audio is exceptional and the sound resonates so powerfully.  I cannot emphasise enough just how perfect the sonic quality is and that is exactly why the Vertigo pressings are so collectable.  When you find a vinyl as clean as this there is just no other medium that can replicate the 'sound' on offer here.  An outstanding album that would grace any collection.

The Gatefold & Swirl Inner

The cover is in lovely condition and has been so well preserved over the last 52+ years.  It has kept its original shape and structure and has clearly not been handled very much.  The top edges are perfect and only the bottom edge of the back cover has a very minimal amount of light rubbing, you have to look closely to see it!  The wide spine again still has its original 'shape' with no marking and all corners are in superb condition with no obvious rare.  The opening edge has barely any handling wear.  The front cover is very clean with just one very small white 'mark' and a small sticker removal mark in the top right corner.  This is only minor and it sort of blends in to the rest of the cover anyway.  The back cover is stunning with only a very faint 'rub' in the bottom left corner.  The inside of the gatefold is predominantly white of course and has to be the cleanest I have ever seen.  So often it is marked / stained but this is so white with only a couple of tiny specks!  The inner spine is also in lovely condition.  A superb example which has to grade as Ex+ in my opinion.

The original swirl inner (dated 1070) is in superb shape with no side splits or tears and has only very minimal age related fading around the edges and very little creasing.
