WHITE LIGHTNING – OF PAUPERS AND POETS / WILLIAM (ATCO 6660) (PROMO) (VG/VG+)

White Lightning were from Minneapolis, MN and was formed by Tom “Zippy” Caplan and Woody Woodrich after they chose to leave the legendary band The Litter in 1968. They named themselves after a brand of LSD, added a new drummer and still continued to rehearse in the same house as other members of The Litter, who had to re-group upon their departure.  As a three-piece, White Lighting only released this single, originally on the Hexagon label and later picked up by Atco. This double sided psych monster single charted locally in Minnesota but didn’t impress anyone very much, so they added two more people to the line-up and went on to record a full LP worth of material circa 69/70 that was never released. They then splintered, reformed, shortened their name to Lightning and actually released a full LP in 1970 with brand new material.  Of Paupers and Poets is a hard rock blitz featuring mind blowing double tracked fuzz guitar leads from Caplan, and William had the same intensity guitar leads, but even upped it a notch to the point where it sounds like full blown “melt guitar.”  All their unreleased material was re-released in the 90’s on CD. This copy is the rarer Atco promo version and is graded visually as VG+ but plays like EX. **NOTE: There is a small chip out of the lead-in portion of the vinyl on the William side that shows up on the other side as a small crack in the lead-in.  This POSITIVELY does not affect play on either side.  Comes with the original Atco sleeve. My preference is to run these auctions on EBAY because of familiarity with the process, but there is the potential that I will switch or use other platforms in parallel in the future.  Check out my collection on DISCOGS under VELVETFOGG. I have only listed 45’s on that site that I plan to auction in 2021/22 and the list will grow substantially on a weekly basis as I continue to go through my collection. I hope to list 10 records per week for EBAY auctions on Sundays.

GRADING SCALE:

NM/M: Played once or twice. No visible surface or playback wear.

EX: Has been played but has no scratches, minimal to no wear and plays without surface noise.

EX- Plays without surface noise, but might have a few visible minor scratches.

VG++: May have a few surface scratches or a little wear, but plays nicely with only minimal surface noise and clicks. No Skips

VG+: "Typical used record".  A little wear, a few minor (light) scratches, but plays well. Surface noise may be more present during soft passages. No Skips

VG: More wear and significant surface noise. Deeper scratches. May have a skip and will be noted.

G: Significant surface noise and scratches and visible groove wear. (Beat up record!) May have skips if noted.
