First released in 1969, Marva Whitney's 'It's My Thing' is still a golden slice of raw, unfiltered funk. Opening with the explosive title track - a fiery answer to the Isley Brothers - Whitney delivers commanding vocals over a band locked into high gear. The energy briefly dips into soulful tenderness on 'If You Love Me,' before snapping back with the grit and swagger of 'Unwind Yourself,' a tune that would echo through decades of samples and breakbeats. This superb reissue restores the album's punch and presence and reaffirms Whitney's status as one of James Brown's fiercest proteges as well as being a defining voice of funk's golden era.
