DEEP ROOTS REGGAE -
Three 1st Press 1979 JA Roots Disco 12”s on the Joe Gibbs Label
1) MARCIA AITKEN - I’m Still in Love / NIGGER KOJAK - Christmas Style / JOE GIBBS & THE PROFESSIONALS - Still Rocking at Christmas. (JGMD8064)
Marcia Aitken’s classic 1979 cover of the Alton Ellis hit, I’m Still in Love, is a Joe Gibbs Deep Roots disco mix that adds a wicked toast by Nigger Kojak called Christmas Style on the same riddim. The flip side is Joe Gibbs & the Professionals with a thumping instrumental version called Still Rocking at Christmas. (JGMD 8064) on the Joe Gibbs label. This 12” was recorded & pressed to sound deep & loud in that classic mid 1970’s Joe Gibbs style. It comes in a great custom die cut 12” label stock sleeve from the era. Vinyl EX- / VG+++. Sleeve VG+ w/ shelf wear
2) MADOO - Yuh Jamming So / NIGGER KOJAK - Greenbay Killing / JOE GIBBS & THE PROFESSIONALS - Jam Fi Bread. (JGDM8057)
Released in 1979, Madoo’s debut sat on top of the iconic Greenbay Killing riddim, and this 12” combined with a different mix of Nigger Kojaks hit. B-sided with a Joe Gibbs & the Professionals instrumental version. Murder…! One note, this 12” has a small ripple warp at the beginning. It plays fine, tracking at 2.5-3g, but lighter tone arms may have a problem. I tried to photograph it, but it was too subtle to see. Still, I wanted to mention it. It also comes in a great custom die cut 12” label stock sleeve from the era. Vinyl sound is EX but w/ small ripple warp so I’m rating it VG+. Sleeve VG+ w/ shelf wear.
3) JACOB MILLER - Back Yard Movement / KILLER BROWN - Fussing & Fighting / JOE GIBBS & THE PROFESSIONALS - Front Page (JGDM8044)
Also from 1979, Back Yard Movement by the late Jacob Miller is paired with Fussing & Fighting by Killer Brown, aka U Brown. And Joe Gibbs & the Professionals ‘Front Page’ is the instrumental on the flip side. This Jamaican pressed single is in a 12” stock retail sleeve from Hawkeye Records in London. Vinyl EX. Sleeve VG.
