WILLIE DIXON
I Am The Blues
.
COLUMBIA Records CS 9987
Original 1970 issue Stereo LP
1st PRESSING • 1C / 1C Matrix numbers
Rarely seen 2-Eye "360 SOUND" Labels
VINYL is VG+
Clean glossy vinyl has a few light non-feelable marks and surface scuffs that are almost entirely inaudible. Side 2 has one, more visible (non-feelable, non-sounding) line as well. Both sides play and sound much better than the visual grade - Some low-level background noise at beginning of Side 1 that clears right up for the rest of side and all of Side 2. Labels are immaculate.
.
COVER is VG+
Crisp, overall clean cover has some light shelf wear and minor rub in a few spots with some edge creases on front. Still, much better than most for this title which is prone to strong ring wear that it is almost always found with. Back is very close to NM. Seams and spine 100% intact with no wear or splits.
STRICT CONSERVATIVE GOLDMINE GRADING
NM / EX(VG++) / VG+ / VG
RARE 2-EYE "360 SOUND" label !
1970 was the year Columbia introduced their new (Red label with Gold 'COLUMBIA' all around perimeter) label.
Very few of this title actually pressed with the 2-EYE label - only as pressing plants used up last dwindling label-stock.
You will find this pressing, with the exact same Matrix numbers as this copy (shown below), as the first listed pressing at DISCOGS,
though they show the far more commonly found next: 'Red/Gold' label.
FIRST PRESSING
MATRIX NUMBERS:
Side One: XSM 151912-1C
Side Two: XSM 151913-1C
Columbia often used 1A - 1F for first pressings across 3 different pressing plants in those days.
1C indeed is First Press on this title.
Willie Dixon was the unofficial Godfather of the Blues from the late 1940's through the early 1970's, writing more songs that became bona-fide Blues staples than any 10 other Bluesmen in that time. But Dixon was not a natural front man; his instrument was the Bass and he was most often found alongside Muddy Waters, Howlin' Wolf, Sonny Boy Williamson, Little Walter or other major Chicago Blues heavies, who all benefited from Dixon's great songwriting, arranging and producing talents. One look at this single track list will give you some small idea. Later his songs would of course be revived to huge audiences by The Rolling Stones, Eric Clapton, Jeff Beck, John Mayall, Led Zeppelin, The Doors and countless others. Dixon's long-standing stint as chief staff Producer for CHESS Records alone brought us a treasure trove of unparalleled Blues greatness.
When Willie Dixon says "I AM THE BLUES" it is no idle boast.
This is an album that belongs in every respectable Blues Collection.
