Wishbone Ash
'Argus'
MCA, UK, 1971
MDKS 8006
THEIR MASTERPIECE! 'Argus' is an all time classic rock album establishing Wishbone Ash amongst the cognoscenti of British rock. Not as heavy as Deep Purple but not as quaint as Barclay James Harvest, they existed in a world where musicianship & songs were more important that posturing and posing. Combining the first ever amalgam of hard rock with British folk rock, the bands penchant for long intricate songs punctuated by impressive guitar duels helped to elevate them to a stately position that lasted for most of the seventies.
This album showcases the band in brilliant form concentrating on songs more than riffing although that doesn't mean to say that the twin lead guitar attack is absent. Certainly tracks such as 'Time Was', 'Blowin Free' and 'The King Will Come' include the customer lead guitar quota alongside great arrangements and exceptionally clean production courtesy of early Deep Purple mastermind Derek Lawrence. It's all here from delicate musical snow flakes to raging twin lead guitar onslaughts pushing the boundaries of progressive rock. Apart from the previous mentioned tracks other standout performances include 'Throw Down The Sword' and the utterly captivating 'Warrior' all housed in one of the ear's most amazing and visually striking album sleeves. I make no apologies for announcing that the Ash were at one point, and to a degree still are, my favourite band - I absolutely adored them.
This auction is part of a fantastic collection of seventies rock which I was lucky enough to acquire. Most of these records were stored with the utmost care and sparsely played. Some were possibly never played or may have been for just a handful of times.
