ITEM: Original Debut album, Self-Titled Amon Duul. Rare White Label Promo released in 1969 on the Prophesy Records label, catalog number PRS-1003.
COMMENTS/CONDITION: I have quite a few Psych/Prog/Punk LP's that I will be posting as time permits. Check back frequently to see my inventory.
Grading was done by a visual inspection under a bright source, and the record was test played.
Grading is in accordance with Goldmine Rating Standards. If you are not familiar with the definitions, please go to Goldmine's web site and review them BEFORE you bid.
This LP came from a private collection, it is not a worn-out ex-library item or a beat up record bought at a yard sale.
The band members came from a commune of Hippies and Artists in Munich, who called themselves "Amon Duul" ( "Amon" was an Egyptian sun god, and "Duul" was a character from Turkish fiction ). The music on this first LP is hard to classify; it is a combination of Psych-Prog-Art and Experimental...definitely unique.
PLEASE NOTE: This record was released from the studio with an engineering/mastering mistake on side 2. There is nothing wrong with the record. At the end of track 1 and the beginning of track 2, there is a series of repeats, or groove lock, some extraneous noise that sounds like a skip, and a false start on track 2. The grooves are precisely cut and undamaged, and the stylus tracks smoothly through the repeats and skips ( if the vinyl was damaged, the stylus would "jerk" as it passed through the damaged grooves that cause the repeats/skips ). These "defects" were recorded on the record - there is no damage to the vinyl.
There are two possibilities as to how this happened: No.1 is the engineers missed these problems when they mastered the disc ( Maybe they ingested some of the German home-grown herb? ); or, No.2, The record was recorded this way on purpose. Track 3 consists of the group playing the same chords repeatedly for most of the cut, giving the impression that the track is one long continual repeat. Either way, the vinyl is fine.
The vinyl is in clean, VG+ Condition, retaining a nice sheen. There are no warps, cracks, deep scratches, or groove wear. Center hole is perfectly round with no signs of repeated playing. Close visual inspection reveals some light scuff and hairline marks that are cosmetic only and do not affect the playback or listening enjoyment of the LP. Both sides played through on my older system with no skips, groove lock, or harsh background noise. ( Note: These comments are for reference only. They are not a statement as to the results you may have with your equipment ).
Both labels are in excellent, clean condition. There are no spindle tracks, tears, peeling edges, stickers, or writing.
The inner sleeve is the original studio sleeve with "A Fairytale From The Garden Of Sandosa" printed in English and German.
The cover is VG+. There are no warps, stickers ( except for a Promo sticker on the back panel ), price tags, or tape. This is not a cut-out, there are no punch holes, saw cut notches, or clipped corners. There is a 4.5 inch split in the center of the left seam, and a 2 inch split in the center of the top seam. Light ring wear and edge wear are also present. Photos and lettering are crisp and clear.
