In an interview, Nathan Weaver says that he conceived the vision for the band and wrote the first two songs "Wolves in the Throne Room" and "Black Tea" at an Earth First! rendezvous in the Gifford Pinchot National Forest in 2002. The band has often performed outdoors and has expressed support for radical environmentalism.

The band was formed during April 2003 when brothers Aaron and Nathan Weaver bought an old farmstead called Calliope, which had previously been rented by students of the nearby Evergreen State College, on the outskirts of Olympia, WA. They then started working on the music that would become the 2004 Demo. In late 2004, guitarist-vocalist Nick Paul joined the band and the group recorded the 2004 Demo, which featured a stronger crust punk and thrash metal influence. In interviews Aaron states that it was the brothers’ goal to create a musical expression of an expanding consciousness that linked the mythic and apocalyptic visions of black metal with "life-changing actions on the physical plane." Nick Paul left the band amicably in late 2004. The addition of vocalist and guitarist Richard Dahlen solidified the band’s line-up. The band went on to record the 2005 Demo, and the Diadem of 12 Stars and Two Hunters albums.

Wolves in the Throne Room has toured the west coast of the United States extensively. In the fall of 2007, the band toured the continental United States. In 2008 the band played on the 13th edition of the Roadburn festival in The Netherlands followed by a 2009 appearance at the French HellFest.

As of 2011, they are recording their fourth studio album, expected to be released in late 2011 or early 2012.

Two Hunters is the second album from the band Wolves in the Throne Room and their debut album on Southern Lord Records. The process of the recording made very minimal use of any digital effects or manipulation. The album's artwork is by Rachel Carns. The vinyl version includes an extended version of 'Cleansing' (which is about 6 minutes longer) and a previously unreleased track 'To Reveal'. This album was critically acclaimed, putting WITTR on the forefront of the black metal scene. The Daymare Recordings release also contains their 2005 demo on a second disk.

This is one of the most surprising Black Metal releases in a long while. From the outset of the album you are thrust into a world of bleak beauty encapsulated in wonder for nature. The first track is an incredible slow procession containing many major chords but with the undeniable fuzz of BM, right from the start you realize this is not going to be a standard BM album. In the classic "Hvis Lyset Tarr Oss" style, the album only contains 4 tracks, one of which being 18 minutes long. One might turn one's nose up at an 18 minute long track however, this is possibly by far the most interesting and gripping 18-minuter that I have personally ever had the privilage to lisen to.

Another notable feature on this album is the presance of a female vocal. Personally, for me, female vocals in metal always lack anything resembling beauty or musical interest. Favouring dull and unimaginative ramblings over something of higher substance. These female vocals do not even come close to the former, they being of such feeling and wonder that you can hardly imagine anything better for this moment of the album. A truly fantastic performance from Jessica Kinney one that will haunt you for days to follow.

All I can say is that this is one of the absolute best albums released in 2007 and anyone who is thinking about getting this, should so, at their earliest convenience.

I couldn't recommend this album highly enough, it will give you goosebumps. Its beautiful, brutal and moving all at the same time and the whole album is like a flowing canvas, different textures and layering of guitars making it very organic. The band lacks a bass player but you hardly notice that at all. The band themselves state; "The music is about wild forests, unfettered rivers, nature: furious and vengeful." and you can really feel this in "Two Hunters". Wolves in the Throne Room use very minimal amounts of any digital effects or manipulation and this definately ties in with the whole ethic that surrounds the band and their work. A wonderful, powerful album.
