Here we have copies of BOTH of the Waikiki Surf Battle albums on the Sounds Of Hawaii label from 1963. Recorded live, these LPs document the 18-group battle of the bands held at the Waikiki Shell on September 14 of that year. Each album features a side devoted to the first, second, and third place bands (The Spiedels, Judy & The Belmonts, and The Road Runners, respectively), and a side devoted to the also-rans, with no overlapping music between the two volumes. Some hot instro action on both of these; as the liners say, "it was wild, man, wild!" There was a single disc comp of these albums back in the 1990s, but here’s your chance to pick up both ORIGINALS in one fell swoop!
Sleeves of both volumes are a solid VG+, with minor discoloration from age and a little creasing around some of the edges. The upper left corner of Vol. 1 has a 1" square tear out of it colored in (probably from a price tag). As to the discs, Volume 1 is quite tidy, at least VG++, with a few visual marks and a small, barely audible, vinyl bubble in the middle. Volume 2 (the rarer of the pair, as far as I can tell) looks VG, with numerous scratches on each side. While several of them are audible, it plays really well – pretty much VG+. Very decent copies of a couple of rare and excellent surf LPs!
