The Fine Print:
Just a few things about vinyl for those of you who may not have years of experience buying and playing records:
First of all - with at least a thousand records to sell, there is no way for me to play-grade them all. Frequently, however, visual grading does not work. I bought some records recently, and when they came in I was ecstatic...they looked immaculate. I gave great feedback to the sellers and then played one of them...it looked NM and sounded VG. On the other hand, when looking at some of mine, thinking they looked G or VG, found that they played better than the "pretty" ones I had just bought. Of course, even unplayed LPs can have pops and defects. Vinyl is, by nature, imperfect.
Bottom line: I will visually grade the record most of the time. If I see an imperfection, I'll frequently play that area to see if it is audible. Obviously that it is not an exact science. If you, the buyer, find the record to be unacceptable, you return it at your expense, but I refund everything you paid, including shipping.
I have read Goldmine's ratings, and try to adhere to those. If I grade a record as NM, VG+, or VG, it refers to Goldmine standards. However, here are some caveats and comments:
A scuff is just that - usually caused by the paper sleeve, or a slip of the cleaning brush. To me, a scuff is non-audible. I have pulled brand new LPs out of the sleeve and observed a scuff. A NM record in my grading can have a scuff or two.
A scratch can be light, usually from a careless handling of the needle, or deep, from mishandling. When I say a scratch is visible, I will try to state if it is audible. Usually if I see a scratch or two that appear to be light, I may still grade the LP as VG+.
I am not one who thinks that the only mint LP is a sealed one. In fact, I believe that one does not know if a sealed LP is mint, because in some 40 years of buying records, I have seen many unplayed LPs with pops and skips. If it looks absolutely flawless, I may grade a record as mint.
My preference is to repair split jackets with acid-free transparent tape. The idea is to stop the splitting as early as possible and to do so with a non-yellowing long lasting tape. I have done this on some of the LPs I will be selling and will try to remember to point it out. If you want me to do this on an LP that you buy and I have described the jacket as split, I will be glad to do so.
