This beautiful and rare LP from Ducretet Thomson (SDUC 503, French pressing, gold label, stereo, "baguette"-style jacket, dowel spine) features pianist Daniel Wayenberg’s richly characterized accounts of Sergei Rachmaninov’s Rhapsody on a Theme by Paganini and Richard Strauss’ Burleske. In both works he is accompanied by conductor Christoph von Dohnanyi and the Philharnonia on brilliant form.
Both recordings were set down at EMI Studio No. 1, Abbey Road, London, in 1964 and sound truly splendid here.

Wayenberg remains greatly under-rated and is an artist whose recorded legacy is richly deserving of systematic re-issue and renewed appreciation on disc. He had strong ideas on all the music he played and all his recordings are touched by a striking individuality, allied to a strong technique and beautiful tone. For all those who treasure the art of the piano, this disc will prove highly rewarding.
There are insightful liner notes on the reverse side of the jacket by Michel-R. Hofmann, printed in French only. The striking cover art is uncredited.
CONDITION – PLEASE READ VERY CAREFULLY:
The gradations of condition I use are as follows: MINT, Near-Mint, Excellent, Very Good, Good, Fair, Poor.
The condition of the heavy cardboard "baguette"-style jacket is EXCELLENT. There is mild discoloration along the edges, but really that is all. There are no bends, seamsplits, or other defects, and the album remains solid, bright, and highly attractive in appearance – overall, this rates as an excellent collector's copy.
The condition of the dowel spine is EXCELLENT – in fine condition.
The condition of the LP itself is near-MINT. Though the surfaces are not perfectly silent (and thus I have rated it NM vs. MINT) this is a fine copy and playback is superb. If you must have perfect surfaces, then please do not buy this LP. Overall, this rates as a NM collector's copy.

This LP has been carefully cleaned using a VPI cleaning machine. All LPs are provided with a new Nagaoka (or Nagaoka-style) inner sleeve.
