We Are The In Crowd have shot from obscurity to buzzworthy in a little over a year, thanks to a pair of sparkling modern-pop singles, "Never Be What You Want" and "For The Win." Those two songs appear on the Poughkeepsie, New York, quintet's solid debut EP, Guaranteed to Disagree. Recorded with producers Zack Odom and Kenneth Mount, who have worked with Cartel and All Time Low, Disagree certainly has no shortage of memorable hooks or tart-pop moments.
Traces of electronic programming--mainly in the form of generic (and somewhat extraneous) sputtering beats--shiny keyboards and soft-glow rock guitars abound. Disagree judiciously adds other flourishes that ensure variety, though: "Lights Out" has crunchy guitars and chiming piano, while "Both Sides Of The Story" feels like a '90s-alt-rock flashback. "We Need A Break" feels like a retro relic, too, thanks to sugar-sweet harmonies and zippy synthesizers. Will Pugh of Cartel shows up to duet with vocalist Tay Jardine on "Never Be What You Want," ensuring its status as a windows-down summer jam.
Thanks to the vocal trade-offs of Jardine and guitarist Jordan Eckes, the band's lyrics are more like dramatic conversations. This makes Disagree far more interesting than the usual singular-perspective collection of songs--especially since these tunes document a couple which has a love-hate relationship, with an emphasis on heartbreak and spurned advances. Jardine will no doubt earn comparisons to Paramore's Hayley Williams (and Hey Monday's Cassadee Pope, for that matter), but she's distinct from those ladies--less of a yelper and more of a pure, sugary pop crooner.
Still, not everything on Disagree is sweet: "We Need A Break" features the lyric, "All damn night and all damn day/Because of you, bitch/I would rather do nothing," with the word "bitch" emphasized with malice. It's an ugly sentiment--and also an ugly mark on an EP whose laments are bittersweet but generally articulate and mature. We Are The In Crowd don't need to resort to such malice to make their point--and as burgeoning role models, they can certainly do better than base name-calling.
SHIPPING & PACKING INFO?
All records are shipped using bubble wrap and cardboard flats (plus extra shrink wrap over the bubble and cardboard if I think the situation calls for it)?all enclosed in a secure LP box that includes extra cardboard planks secured on the outside off each corner. Shipment is clearly marked "fragile" on both sides.
Each "loose" LP is shipped outside of the cover and packaged within a poly bag. Records are notorious for tearing through these jackets during the shipping process. Thus, many smaller labels ship records outside of the cover in a poly bag to eliminate damage (and ultimately replacement costs).
Note that all boxsets are given extra special attention to arrive safe and sound through the mail.
Upon request, I can open any sealed record and ship it outside of the sleeve (both placed within a poly bag).
Unless damaged through the mail, any return postage must be paid by buyer. Purchases must be returned as delivered.

We like smart, well-written lyrics and big guitars most of the time. But we can dig Natalie Merchant singing "Verdi Cries" or Jay Som's "I Think You're Alright". Or her cool-as-shit ditty to Rush... "Why'd you wait...so long". One of us teaches high school English, the other is imaginary. It just sounds less artificial and not so pompous to think people care about one guy's taste. (But we are currently really digging Bridget Kearney's (Lake Street Dive) new solo record Won't Let You Down.
