2008 marks the 25th Anniversary of the release of this debut album from the Southern California Hardcore stalwarts.  This reissue includes the long out of print original LP as well as a second vinyl album, pressed in random "mystery colors", featuring previously unreleased recordings of the band's second and third live gigs.

Record two includes- their famous first "real gig", supporting Black Flag, to an army of very angry skinheads in Hemet, California, August 31, 1982.  The deluxe packaging features a hand numbered silver foil stamped front cover, heavy duty 5mm spine sleeve, a 12" x 24" reproduction of the original 3' x 4' promotional poster, the original 1983 insert, and a copy of the rare flier from the Black Flag support gig.

White Flag formed in 1982 in Sunnymead, an unincorporated area of California's Inland Empire now called Moreno Valley.  They played their first shows that year (the second and third of which were later included on their "S Is For Space – 25th Anniversary De Luxe Edition").  The band's name is itself a play on the name of iconic hardcore band Black Flag and is meant as a parody on punk rock elitism.  Similarly, the punk rock names of band members were chosen to resemble those of JelloBiafra, Mike Ness, and Pat Smear, each an icon of the California punk scene in their own right.

In a 1983 Flipside interview, guitarist Pat Fear noted:

"People give us a lot of shit for being called 'White Flag' and that we're ripping off Black Flag and all the Black Flag bros in Long Beach want to kill us — but the truth is Black Flag are our friends, Henry is like our biggest fan. So why are these Black Flag people trying to kick our asses?

"The whole reason for the name is to reintroduce anarchy back into the musical aspect of punk, because when it started out it wasn't political and it was not violent, like when Johnny Rotten said...he was not singing about anarchy, he wanted musical anarchy.  Not social or government anarchy or violence and people blew it out of proportion.... So we're trying to get back to an anarchistic state of music...”

The band recorded two albums in 1982, “R is for Rocket” and “S is for Space” the latter being released in 1983. After playing numerous shows around California, the band toured Europe for their first time in 1986, and released a live EP from that tour titled "Bleedin' in Sweden."

Over the years, many musicians have passed through the ranks of White Flag.  The band's recordings or live performances have at one time featured both Ken Stringfellow (who appears under the name Kim Crimson) and Jon Auer of the Posies, Kim Shattuck and Ronnie Barnett of the Muffs, Jeff McDonald and Steve McDonald of Redd Kross, Greg Hetson from Bad Religion, Dale Crover from the Melvins, and Eric Erlandson from Hole, to name only a few.

JACKET GRADING:

NEAR MINT: Factory SEALED, unopened.  OR a very pristine jacket with shrink wrap intact; LP may or may not have been opened.  

Generally speaking, if an LP has been opened it will usually have some minor dings or minute blemishes, meaning a "Near Mint Minus" (NM –) rating.  

If an album jacket is not listed as “SEALED” but listed as “NEAR MINT” that means the jacket itself is, in essence, flawless – whether or not it has been opened or not.  

             PLEASE NOTE: 

The highest grade I will ever assign an LP Jacket is “Near Mint.”  There may be slight wrinkles or minute tears in the shrink-wrap, or mild marring of the intact plastic shrink, but the jacket itself has no noticeable flaws.

– Technically the highest grade a jacket can ever be accurately listed as is “Near Mint” whether it is a sealed copy or if the LP has been opened.  As soon as an album is handled and shipped after being pressed, assume some minor blemishes automatically occur – even if imperceptible. 

Thus, FACTORY SEALED LP’s the VINYL LP’s are assumed “MINT”, i.e., as originally pressed, packaged and shipped for sale, new.  

But with FACTORY SEALED LP’s the LP JACKETS are always listed as NEAR MINT unless other more significant flaws are noted.  Thus, the highest grade I will ever assign an LP Jacket is “Near Mint” (NM).  There may be slight wrinkles or minute tears in the shrink-wrap, or mild marring of the intact plastic shrink, but the jacket has no noticeable flaws (and flaws in the shrink-wrap will be noted).

Near Mint Minus, NM – :  Jacket may or may not have original shrinkwrap (though most jackets which do not have their original shrinkwrap will usually not be clean enough to warrant a NM– rating).  Shrinkwrap may have small blemishes (mars) or tears but the jacket itself will show no significant signs of wear.  The jacket will look new, with only mild imperfections (a small crease or dent, perhaps the shrinkwrap has some marring, but the jacket has only the most mild defects).

ABOUT THE SELLER:

I have avidly collected and scrounged LP’s for over 30 years.  I have sold LP records in Madison, Wisconsin for over a decade now – people simply know me as “the record guy.”  I have never had a store and instead just sell sporadically at rummage-sales, flea-markets, festivals, local coffee-shops, businesses etc.  Integrity is the best advertising and the majority of people who buy records from me, are repeat buyers.  Full disclosure and fairness in pricing are what brings people back.  In other words, you are buying from a reputable seller.

Over the years I have found that generally records for sale fall into two groups: out-of-the-bin; and on-line.  The problem with selling out-of-the-bin (as dealers readily understand) is the albums can take a bit of a beating from careless shoppers.  Corners get dinged, people touch the vinyl playing surface with their grubby little fingers, jackets get small creases and bends, the vinyl gets abrasions from being taken in and out of the sleeves repetitively (liner-scuff), shrink-wraps get torn, etc.  The tire-kickers want to look at every expensive album, but usually don’t take the care to do it properly. 

Thus, collectible albums get devalued by just being handled – making on-line selling the best alternative for rare and hard to find vinyl.  The problem is I am not very tech savvy or clerically adept and find the time to sell albums on-line to be very time consuming.  This being said, please rest assured I will do everything in my power to take any and all guess work out of the LP’s I list on-line.  Feel free to contact me for any questions you may have about a specific album, and I will usually be able to respond within 24-hours.

Because expectation levels can vary considerably, I tend to grade my LP’s (and their Jackets) very conservatively, i.e., I tend to grade them one distinction lower than they actually are.  Meaning an album which is listed at VG++ is, at worst, a VG++ LP or higher (an album most sellers would list as NM – or higher). 

Finally, all of the LP’s I list on-line are not LP’s which were initially put out for sale in the bins.  This is important to note because, as explained above, the albums have not been handled by the general public.  And of course whether I sell an album out-of-the-bin or on-line, I take the time to clean and screen every album I sell.  Because ultimately an album may look spectacular, but until you play it there is no way to accurately know how good the LP plays.   Also, all of my LP’s after being cleaned and screened the Vinyl records and the LP Jackets are stored/protected in new Polyethylene (plastic) Sleeves.  And if you read all of this thanx and good luck!
