Description
Usually quite professional in his recordings, something causes Rudy
Vallee to have uncontrollable laughter nearly throughout the second
half of this tune entitled "The Drunkard Song (There Is A Tavern In
The Town)."
The record, as credited to Rudy Vallee & His Connecticut Yankees, is
on 78rpm scroll label Victor 24739. However, the A side label is white,
with a red handwritten note from Edward Wallerstein (a Victor
executive at the time) suggesting that the "slip-up" should be
released to the public, with an OK by Rudy added.
What causes Rudy's unmanageable laughter hasn't been verified to
my knowledge. One suggestion is that it was simply the corny lyrics
to the song, while another suggestion is that one of the band
members "mooned" Rudy.
Whatever happened, it is virtually impossible to listen to this record
and keep a smile off your face. Truly entertaining!
On the reverse side, they do another fun tune called "The Tattooed
Lady."
Both sides were done in New York City on September 7, 1934.
The record is in excellent-minus (E-) condition. There is a dealer
sticker (Liberty Music Shops) at the top half of the B side scroll label,
probably removable.
