Why The Mountains Are Black (Primeval Greek Village Music: 1907-1960). This two disc collection of primal and unhinged Greek village music often sounds more like free jazz or doom folk with its feral and trance-like grooves, and is the result of years of research, fieldwork and collecting by Christopher King-Grammy-winning producer, sound-engineer, curator and writer. Gathered together from his private 78 rpm archive, King has compiled the most mind expanding and libido inducing song and dance music from the rural hinterlands of mainland Greece and its islands. These are unissued songs recorded in Athens, New York, and Chicago in the first part of the 20th century, and the cover art is the work of R. Crumb and Susan Archie. A beautifully thought-provoking if not radical essay on this music by King accompanies the lavish package. Not simply for historians or collectors of long gone sounds, this compilation is intended to push the limits of what we have come to expect of music, its purpose and indeed its origin. You will experience a profound musical transformation immediately upon listening.
This record is brand new, in mint condition, and still sealed. I purchased at the TMR party where Christopher King was the DJ. I will open record and ship records outside of sleeve to prevent seem splitting, if requested.
Shipping to the lower 48 only, sorry
