BEETHOVEN - The 32 Piano Sonatas

This is a quite unusual edition in that the box was produced by Italian Decca, though the 14 LPs housed inside are English pressings. The box itself is quite impressive, of clamshell design with a beautiful heavy textured cover, embossed in gold. It is quite solid. The inside left interior panel lists the contents first by LP catalog number (i.e., LXT 2532 Sonate nn. 12 e 21) and then by Sonata (i.e., n. 1 op. 2 n. 1 in Fa minore LXT 2902). The 14 LPs are each in their own individual jacket. Some of the labels are orange/silver, others orange gold – all mono.

Both the back of the box set and the booklet say "Made in Germany". See the 2 photos. The label says "Polydor International" but the writing is in German.
On Feb-28-24 at 11:50:51 PST, seller added the following information:This exceedingly rare 14 LP deluxe box set from Decca features Wilhelm Backhaus' legendary mono cycle of Beethoven's 32 Piano Sonatas, recorded in the fabled acoustics of Victoria Hall, Geneva beginning in June 1950 with the Piano Sonata Op. 26 and concluding in March 1954 with the Sonata Op. 31 No. 3. Also included is Backhaus's superb rendition of Chopin's Piano Sonata No. 2 in B-flat minor Op. 35, a wonderful bonus.
