Wire - Pink Flag (Vinyl, 1978, Harvest Records, ST-11757).
The 1978 original US release of Wire's groundbreaking, thrilling, debut album. Pink Flag received tremendous critical acclaim when it was released, but the record and the band never achieved great commercial success.
Pink Flag is generally considered one of the important records of the punk era, and it opened the way for post-punk. My issue with much British punk was that much of it was too heavy and political for my taste; I always preferred the more lighthearted approach of US punk bands. But Wire skirts that line -- the music is punchy and fun, but serious and affecting enough.
I can hear inspiration for The Minutemen, Husker Du, Flipper, and others in this wonderful record.
Pink Flag deals out short little slaps, one on another, and the effect is mesmerizing. One brilliant example of Wire's craft is "Field Day For The Sundays," which, in the space of 28 seconds, perfectly captures the stupidity of fame and the media feeding frenzy it engenders.
There is a simple non-gatefold jacket, with a custom inner sleeve with the lyrics printed on it. One unusual feature is that the warning about explicit lyrics is actually printed on the jacket, as to the practice of putting a sticker on the shrink wrap. The printed warning is clearly visible in the front cover photo, above.
The jacket is in very good shape. There is some slight discoloration in some of the lighter-colored areas, but minimal corner and edge wear. The inner sleeve has slight splits on all three sides but is intact.
The record sounds good, but feels a little "under recorded" like many records of this era.
A record that managed to be of its time and yet ahead of its time, simultaneously. This version seems to fairly rare, as well.
