Wolves In The Throne Room Diadem Of 12 Stars On Limited Edition 2 x 180g Aqua Vinyl LP Set Of 500 Copies
Hailing from deep in the country just outside of Olympia, Washington, Wolves in the Throne Room are brothers Nathan (guitar vocals) and Aaron Weaver (drums) and Rick Dahlin (guitar). Their debut 2006 album Diadem of 12 Stars was recorded in San Francisco with Tim Green at Louder Studios. It was through this recording and the band being heavily praised within the metal underground that they caught the attention of Southern Lord who subsequently signed the band to the label in late 2006.
The groups willingness to experiment with unconventional methods of recording and collaborate with avant-garde musicians sets them apart from the mundane normalcy that plagues many Black Metal bands albums. This willingness to take chances and forge ahead with disregard of convention or boundaries makes them a perfect fit on the Southern Lord roster. The band's more interested in using black metal song structures to create atmosphere and layered texture rather than mindless aggression, and while the guitars rage like an ice storm and bury the harsh vocals, it occasionally comes off more like muscular shoegaze rock than thrash. Fittingly, gentle folk influences and crystalline guitar passages occasionally poke their heads through the otherwise stormy squall. Diadem Of Twelve Stars is a textbook example of using ugliness to create something beautiful.
