Steve Howe appeared with the band for the first time and played a prominent role throughout. The band explored longer songs with "Yours Is No Disgrace", "Starship Trooper", and "Perpetual Change", foreshadowing the many side-length tracks that followed on Close to the Edge, Tales from Topographic Oceans and Relayer.

The spacey, electronic-sounding guitar effect in "Starship Trooper" was achieved via a flanger, a device that was relatively new at the time of the recording.

Tony Kaye preferred Hammond B-3 and piano over the "new" (at the time) Moog synthesizers that Anderson was interested in using. This became a cause of contention within the band and had an influence on the line-up change, bringing in Rick Wakeman and his array of electronic keyboards from Strawbs. (On the album cover's inside gatefold, however, Kaye is pictured playing a Hammond spinet organ, probably an L-100 or M-100.)

In 2000 Q magazine placed the album at number 86 in its list of the 100 Greatest British Albums Ever.

Howe's solo acoustic tune, "Clap", was heavily influenced by the Davy Graham track 'Fingerbuster'. The piece was written to celebrate the birth of Howe's son Dylan and the baby's attempts to clap in his pram.[citation needed]

According to Alice Cooper on his radio show Nights with Alice Cooper , Anderson claimed to have written the first two movements of "Starship Trooper" alone, though the "Disillusion" movement (which evolved from an earlier song "For Everyone", heard on Something's Coming: The BBC Recordings 1969–1970 and The Word Is Live) is credited to Chris Squire.

The Würm part of "Starship Trooper" is a continuous cadenza of chords (G-Eb-C) played by ensemble and repeated adlib: first accompaniment: electric guitar on the right stereo channel, then acoustic guitar, bass pedals, and drums from middle channel, then organ and bass guitar with tremolo and distortion from left channel, then starts the guitar solo, that swaps from side to side. The whole piece lasts about three and a half minutes. "Würm" originally evolved from a song called "Nether Street" by Howe's earlier group, Bodast. While "Wurm" (without the umlaut over the "u") is an Old English word for "dragon" (worm, wurm, wyrm), the Würm is a river in Germany which gave its name to an ice age in geology.

More than any other good Yes album, this one is heavily riff-based; in fact, it contains most of the best riffs that Yes would ever write. Whereas Yes would develop compositionally to move away from the rock-based riff, they're out in abundance on The Yes Album. Then there are the lyrics. In fact, this is about as close to a lyrically-pleasing album that I've ever heard Anderson pen. Less obtuse and random than what would come later, the songs here are imaginative but for whatever reason they don't strike me as self-indulgent gobbledegook - the music is so fresh-sounding that buying into whatever Anderson is selling seems effortless. The music on The Yes Album is timeless, yet the album is very much a product of its era. The innocence of this record and the band's "anything is possible" convictions imbues these wonderful songs with a positive, organic vibe that places it squarely in the post-psychedelic late '60s/early '70s. Yes would go on to make more challenging and complex music on later releases, but to my ears they never made another album where the words and the music worked together as successfully.      This is a fine example with FIRST MATRICES & STAMPERS, most likely to be ONE OF THE VERY EARLIEST FIRST PRESSINGS. This represents a RARE OPPORTUNITY to buy an EXCELLENT EXAMPLE of a VERY SCARCE CLASSIC ALBUM.

             Sensational sound quality, NO skips or jumps.   There are only a couple of tiny wispy hairlines, totally inaudible on replay. Don't be mistaken, this is a great quality vinyl, worthy of inclusion into a great prog collection!!! Inspected under an intense lightsource and angled.

I have played this in FULL> The replay is ASTOUNDING!!! I first played for a general listen and a second time for a more in-depth observation.

      Of course there are NO skips, jumps or sticks. Unbelievably as it may sound there is hardly any  background noise at all. Impossible to find for this 1971 vinyl!!!   Great classic tracks like "Starship Trooper" and "I've Seen All Good People". My personal favourite would be "Perpetual Change", an obtuse track that previewed what was yet to come ...   I played this on my Technics turntable with a Linn cartridge and through my very revealing B&W three way speakers!!!

Vinyl: EX . This is a seriously desirable album and very rare in this great condition!!! Very heavy and a deep glossy sheen make you aware this is something special. The replay is simply outstanding!!! I played this twice and quite unusually for this album it did NOT suffer from any crackle. A properly looked after gem. One light hairline on side one has no effect on the terrific audio and is totally inaudible. The stereo separation is awesome on this vinyl and far warmer than later re-issues. Needless to say, there are NO jumps, skips or sticks. 

Gatefold sleeve: VG++ to EX.   Light rubbing on the edges and corners the spine remains fully legible. Only one small name to the back and a number 40 to the top, not intrusive. This is a very fragile sleeve , unlaminated and for that reason very vulnerable. Most of these are completely worn. This sleeve is still great retaining the full colours and one of the better matt sleeves around. This is a very decent sleeve indeed.

 In my opinion this is an exceptionally rare and important example of a timeless musical masterpiece - HIGHLY RECOMMENDED!!!  This is a unique investment opportunity!!! Finding this album in any condition at all is nearly impossible, LEAVE ALONE IN THIS GREAT EX CONDITION!!!

Labels are NM with only minor spindling. The inside sleeve is the original blue printed one with polylining. It has a stamp to the front "Sam's Collectable Records".
