Brief Info: A hugely expansive double set with just four tracks. It had mixed reviews by critics of the day and even some Yes fans thought it pushed the boundaries of progressive rock a little too far – it even divided the band with Wakeman well-documented as being less than delighted with it. But when it came to selling, few had many reservations and this sold well. Virtuoso musicianship from some of rock’s finest, Howe has claimed some of his best guitar work is featured on this set. Beautifully recorded and personally I think it’s under-appreciated, side one’s ‘The Ancient’ is simply superb but I like all four sides – long tracks to get the mind and senses around. Whatever, this copy looks barely played and sounds stunning with barely an audio blemish to ruin the experience. Yes fans, new and old, enjoy this album for what it is, an original prog gem.

This Cover’s Potential for Wear: Very High: double albums in matt gatefolds usually means ringwear and rubbing. This has never been an easy cover to find devoid of wear.

Cover Grade and Format: EXCELLENT: an unlaminated gatefold format with matt finish. Printed and made in England by Shorewood. Includes original plain unlined inners.

Cover Front: A mildish rub rim arc near the top edge and a fine lightly rubbed crease near the top right corner. This apart, little else to fault on what is a very attractive Roger Dean designed cover. Few marks or creases, just three fines ones on the spine edge only and the graphic retains rich unfaded colour with any surface marks few, light and very faint.

Cover Back: The back is even better with just a similarly faint arc rub in the same position as the front. The overall lack of ringwear is great news as this can often be badly affected with penetrating full circles hardly uncommon.

Cover Inner Gatefold: The centre spread has barely anything to fault and looks superb.

Top Edges: Mainly light and patchy rubbing with a small scuff on the back centre, this also small.

Bottom Edges: Very light and again, patchy rubbing that shows little. A little more near the right corner.

Right Edge(s), and Type: Clean, mainly very sharp with little wear and no trimming. Records entered on these right outside edges.

Spine and Text: Solid, straight, uncompressed and folded almost square, both right edges meet up quite closely together and near parallel. The arwork shows minimal traces of any wear, no text was printed on this one.

Corners: Light tip rubs and all retain fine to very fine shape.

Cover Summary: A very strong all-round example of this very fragile 70’s cover, one that will prove difficult to find much better. This beautiful item should please most collectors and yet another wonderful Roger Dead picturescape.

The Inner Sleeves: Both grade minimum Excellent and are guaranteed the original, mirror-image pair that came with this album. Plain white, unlined with open windows and all four circles are pristine. Only very mildly aged with modest darkening to the white surfaces with barely any traces of glue darkening on the seams which all remain secure and unsplit with no repairs. Hardly any creasing worthy of mention and two very neat unspoilt inner sleeves.

Vinyl Condition/Visual Grading: MINT(-) / EXCELLENT: the only reason why one of these barely played records grades visually Excellent is because any minor surface blemishes lie within the pressing and nothing to do with any wear, use or abuse, that simply has not happened. As I have mentioned many times before, 1972-73 was the era of the oil crisis where the raw commodity that went into making vinyl records was scarce and using sparingly. Pressing and visual quality often suffered (and sometimes audio did also on some labels). So simply, some records made at this time were less ‘pretty’ than years previous. But let me make this clear, BOTH THESE RECORDS PLAY SUPERBLY. A very fine visual pair that are very clean, shiny, intense black and solidly pressed. A pair from the collection of barely used records I am currently listing and these again are of high quality. Visually one fine record, the other very fine that should please most collectors.

Album Played For Grading: Yes. [I play ALL records I offer before submitting to Ebay, also the record is played in its entirety unless clearly stated otherwise. I do NOT play snippets or joining grooves to check for sound quality and quietness – I play from the beginning to end via clinically revealing B&W speakers that include the legendary tweeter from their awesome Nautilus range that reveals every blemish or minuscule sound present on any record.]

Sound Quality and Audio Grading: Both records play up to and even exceed their high visual gradings with nothing to fault. Strong, distortion-free sound, all frequencies are sharp and clear - sound quality is immensely high with a wide dynamic range and very detailed sound. Any surface sounds are minimal indeed and no pops or clicks were noted and this is an exceptional clean pressing for a fairly challenging album. Few copies will outperform this early pressing significantly I feel sure. I am certain both records have been played very lightly and have been clearly well stored and carefully handled, almost certainly in a non-smoking environment. Nothing spoilt my pleasure when play-grading these beautifully recorded and produced records. This set will prove very difficult to find significantly better and can be strongly recommended.

All records are posted in professional thick boxes (NOT Mailers or Cruciforms, these do not offer maximum protection). SOME GENERAL GUIDES TO WEAR AND CONDITIONS TO HELP YOU DECIDE

My Use of Description Terminology: Surface Marks = Superficial, usually light marks, hairlines or light scuffs that rarely sound. Scratch = a needle mark that goes below the record’s surface, some will sound, some will not, my play-grade will inform. Original = a record that has been pressed with the first label design which does NOT neccessarily mean a very first pressed record. First Pressing = A record that I believe or know to be a genuine very first pressed record. I do not claim to always know for sure, and that’s why I state the stamper and matrix numbers if at all possible, for those who claim to know what they all mean, the information is there for the collector to decide. I prefer to use terms like ‘Early Copy’ rather than ‘First Pressing’ if I am not totally sure. Surface Sound = Mild, light sound, usually light crackle or similar. Distortion = Break up of the actual sound caused by groove wear or damage from a chipped stylus – the most undesirable form of unwanted sound, vintage mono records were the most prone to this happening but not exclusively so. The symptoms of distortion are high frequency clipping, moderate constant crackle or an echo type sound quality. Violin, piano and vocals are most prone to groove-wear distortion. Feathering = Fraying or softening of the entry edge of a cover. Covers with feathered entrance edges are more likely to have had the actual record inserted and removed more than a non-feathered, sharp-edged cover which are always far more attractive. Set Off, actually a printer’s term for dark ink leaving mild residue on pale or white ink when rested upon. e.g. when a gatefold cover has black ink closed against white, this can leave some black residue on the pale area – this is mostly unavoidable or course.

The Argument for Vinyl Original sound and mix (mono mixes are rarely available on CD), high quality sound on clean copies (played on a hi-end dedicated analogue system – breathtaking sound!), beautiful, large format covers, artwork, inserts and even full size posters etc; huge investment potential, and the pleasure of owning ‘the real thing’.
